Fueling a two-stroke generator

Boys, I managed to get a small 650w generator from someone who's upgrading to a bigger unit for a song.

This is the model http://www.kalahari.com/Tools/Fragram-2-Stroke-Petrol-Generator-650W_p_50146268

On all sites it says that the thing uses unleaded, but I know two stroke engines usually use oil and petrol mixed.

Is this so? If so what kind of oil do I buy?

2 Stroke oil?

You need 2 stroke oil which you can buy at most garages or spares shops and then mix it according to the generators ratio.
Fuel does not matter as the 2 stroke oil does the lubing.

Two-stroke generators are a really dumb idea, rather heavy on fuel and they smoke a lot.

2 Stroke engines need a fuel to oil ratio of between 25:1 and 50:1. Did you not get an owners manual with it?

Those generators are usually a 50:1 fuel to oil ratio. You can get the 2 stroke oil anywhere basically. Gans,Japan Spares,Game,Checkers Hyper any place that sells generators or petrol grasscutters and so on.

On the side of the generator would be a label stating the fuel mixing ratio. too much oil can't damage it but smokes more. Slightly less oil might reduce the engine life but won't do much damage. Too less oil damage could seize the engine.

2strokes are awesome the environment just takes a beating.

They're old hat and there's no reviving the tech, and environment or whatever reason is why you don't see 2 stroke competitive racing nowadays. Still the best tech for internal combustion is rotary which unfortunately relies heavily on material engineering to move forward.

Get the Shell two stroke oil. Do not go for the no name brands. It is not much more than the cheapie oils. But works much better.

unleaded Petrol(esp 93) has a shelf life of 1 to 3 months(MAX). That means you must replace the petrol every two months. Else you will get varnish and algae buildup inside. And this will cause issues with the gennie. Or you can get a fuel stabilizer.

Correct oil mixture is vital to keep it healthy.

DONOT under any circumstance use it indoors. It should be atleast 5 meters away from the house. Ensure this does not sit in front of your neighbors bedroom window.

There is also a service every approx 50hours (see your owners manual for more info). You must also run it once a month

^^^ Can not agree more. 2 stroke engines needs to be run for like 30mins weekly I will say.

If it stands too long the carboretor will get messed with the oil then the needle and seet will stop closing properly cause it to leak.... Keep it running regularly to avoid a headache of cleaning the carboretor....

Is there not a separate reservoir for the oil?

Just check the underside of the fuel tank cap. Normally it looks like a plastic measuring cup, and it is the exact amount of oil you should use on a tank of petrol. I have 3 different generators and they all have it.
