I bought a 320G Fujitsu Siemens Storage Bird about two months ago from Makro. Started making backups two weeks ago in order to format the laptop. I wanted to transfer all the data back to the laptop today and...nothing. Its dead. All my data, all my studies gone.

I bought this external drive to make backups in case I loose my laptop and there it goes and breaks down. Ironic or what??

Any idea how I can retrieve my data from the external drive?

zaber, speak to The Techie or GaryvdH, i'm too lazy to post.

Maybe Hiren's BootCD 10?

I will do, thank you. I saw the following error message:

"Error performing inpage operation"

What does this mean?

I found this:

"1. Start > Run > type in cmd then click OK to get a command prompt.
2. Type in chkdsk e: /r (replace e: with the drive letter of your external hard drive).

This won't do any harm, it will fix errors on the disk and try to recover data from bad sectors. It might not solve the problem but it's worth a try."

It is actually checking and replacing bad clusters at the moment - it just might work!

1. Buying an external HDD [that moves around with you] for backing up important stuffs is a bad idea.

2. The way I see "backing up" is that it means having two copies of the stuffs.

Good luck!
