 I am looking to buy a laptop but can't decide which one. It is mainly for programming purposes and web page editing.

I need at least 1 GB RAM. Now I know Acer is good and so is their warranty but others say Fujitsu Siemens is better???

Could someone please tell me or give me advice - laptops isn't my strong poiont

I've had a Fujitsu Siemens and I know 4 other people who had them as well. All I can say is that every single one of them has been returned because of screen / dvd related problems. My screen would wobble around 5cm, the DVD stopped working after already being replaced and when the drive crashed I was told it would cost R6200 to fix the screen, drive, hdd and the motherboard because that was also faulty.

I've never had any issues with the acer laptops I sell... and with the 3yr extended warranty option, its definitely a better choice... but thats only from my experiences

I have had an Acer for about three years now and i have thrown it in the back of my bakkies and trekked it around with me and generally shown it very little respect and it starts up fine every morning

Never heard anyone complain about them

Never used acer, but fujitsu is the brand the UN uses in southern africa, and of all the laptops in use not one has failed yet in some really shocking circumstances. The model mainly used is the lifebook s7010, I have one, love it. Have seen issues with hp's ibm's and worst of all toshiba's, believe there is even a class action out on toshiba's in the states...

we use hp lappies, and we do have issues with them (newer models). We also do have a few older models HP lappies, and haven't had any issues with the older models... go figure....

My new laptop is a Sony VAIO FE28GP and it's got 1GB RAM, Geforce GO graphics chip, built in webcam and an excellent screen. I'm very happy with it! Loads of harddrive space as well (120GB)

Acer definitely. have had alot of crap with Fujitsu notebooks.
Still running two HPs, one of which is now 5 years old ... no problems whatsoever with it

Acer I have 2 acers almost 2 years old now and they have been put thru there paces (used them to program controll modules in some weird places) an d the one lives in my boot and i drive like and animal covering alot of gravel (vibrations) my friend has had 2 Siemens things and they fall over all the time. I'm busy quoting him on a Acer or HP :D

If you willing to import Gateway make great laptops but I dunno what warrentee would be like here u can custom spec a killer one for a excelent price. A friend brought 2 over from the US last year

definetly Fujitsu Siemens, Acers have why to much comebacks; why do you think they give a three year international garrenty?

Acers come with a 1 yr warranty. You would need to ask for and buy the extended warranty if you want it

go acer, Besides my previose acer having a loose harddrive screw witch shorted out the mainboard ( 1 week out of warrentee) I have had no problems. I love my 3620WXMI it is well speced and looks good,

While I have nothing against F-S (quite like the brand, actually) I'll give an Acer vote too. Like Gunny I've put mine through lots of hell (2 years worth of daily driving (I'm a support tech, I drive a LOT ..with vim and vigour!)) ..and two nights ago it took a fist to the keyboard (I was ..less.. than happy at the time) which initially gave every sign of having killed it  - but I took it apart (in a case of morbid fascination to see what the 'killing' blow did) ..and blow me if, in its dismantled state it promptly started working again! So, while I still have a working machine, it does have this keyboard depression that still feels weird (but I'm getting used to it) :p

I have had my trustee Fujitsu-S for 4 years now, it's also taken a beating, but never complains. Damn good build if you ask me, and i would recommned it, if it was not far the price.
I'm hopefully getting a new acer next week (yay:) ) -you can't beat it with the value v$ buck!
My girlfriends entire office uses acer's, +/- 6 people -and they have no problems at all. I am a bit weary of the support you get after sales though - but Fujitsu siemens was nothing special anyway.
I have heard of people having problems with HP (Bluetooth module) an Dell (but Dell have excellent support I hear)

My Acer 8104WLMi has been great with zero problems. Had a TM800 series before for a couple of years that had no problems either.
One tip for anyone with a laptop, get the RMClock utility.
