..oh HELL yes! Well, kinda: for me it's less about the ctrl being in the outer position than it simply IS on the RHS of the keyboard: I've spent way, WAY too many years using that ctrl key (and being a keyboard junkie I use it a lot) for me to accept a 'board that has only the LHS one ..a cardinal sin of which Toshiba is nearly always guilty.

Dude, seriously! :rolleyes: "more prettier" doesn't give you space to store files; "more prettier" is a nice to have when all your real, performance parameters have been met and you're just casting around for something else to get excited about because you can :D Also, still working with those two options, I'd look at FAR more important things like:

- number of USB ports (The Tosh trumps the Acer on this one)
- (presence of) Firewire (Tosh seems to win here, I suspect incomplete stats on the Acer)
- LAN card speed (nowadays you want GbE, 100TX is passé ..and infuriating when you have to copy large volumes of files)
- futureproofing/stalling off the inevitable: Tosh has PCI express AND a PC Card slot, Acer loses ..again :cries:
- whether it can support the data card (SD/MMC/CF/MS) *you* use (but GFL if it's a CF, you're buying a CF/PCCard adapter either way)
- then it's down to things like screen/keyboard which is far more subjective and depends very much on what the user wants from their machine.

I'm not stupid - obviously i'd look at stuff like that. Th notbook will be used for programming mostly but some other stuff aswell.

Both these noteboks have enough USB, both have card readers etc etc... blah blah blah

You missed my point / question:
Nobody has anything bad to say about ACER and I know that they manufacture very good noteboks - but what about TOSHIBA, what are they like int terms of reliability, their warranty etc. Does anybody have any experience working with a TOSHIBA, are they built tough like ACER.


The HDD thing - God thought it good to give man the ability to develop external HDDs and very big flash drives. And if you are lucky enough to have a normal PC with more than 200 GB space then I guess the size of the notebook HDD isn't really a factor

Right now, to my mind, there's nothing to compete with Acer as far as the combination bang for bucks, overall quality, durability and performances goes.

The only thing that compares is Dell, but they're quite a bit more expensive.

Don't buy HP. They're good notebooks, but slow, considering the specs, and their motherboards have a tendancy to blow, and their support in S.A. is really crap. This is not based on a single incident - at work we've sent a good 30 or 40 HP desktops/notebooks back over the last three years. Haven't had a single good experiences. They give you sh*t like taking 7 weeks to replace a 40GB IDE Seagate hard disc. Just stay away.

Don't buy Mecer - Desktop components in a notebook (and not even good stuff). Cheap ass local rubbish

My big problem with Fujitsu Siemens is their hard discs don't last.

ASUS - haven't seen one that doesn't run way too hot and fail after two or so years as a result.

Sahara - who?

My only gripe with Acer is that they don't give you a Windows CD or a restore CD. There is, however, a program that comes pre installed, that will burn a restore CD/DVD for you (the default state) and it can also take a snapshot of your system and burn a restore CD/DVD for you based on that.

Oh, and Acer's warranty is international.

I have to agree, the Gateways are really good quality, strong performance. No local support though. I got my sis one, but then, she lives in the 'States. Support there is fantastic.
 
I have a Fuji and friends have Packard Bells and HPs. Mine has worked fine all the time, but maybe cos of all the maintenance I do [freak]. Friends have had problems with wireless and DVD (HP) and really slow speeds, constant crashes (PB). In my opinion, get a Mac

F-S got a real nice feel to it but I say quality and long lasting-wise, probably same as Acer.
Asus is known to be better than Acer, through out the asian countrys where they originated from...So maybe u can give that a thought~
Personally I got Hp-Compaq laptop, not bad so far :p
 
Toshiba is not that bad worked on a few nice machines but I havent had one long enough to realy know what they like but they seem ok.
