Web Developer Intern for Cognician Software
Cognician is an application that helps you think through problems by allowing you to apply powerful ideas directly to your own challenges. It’s new, it’s unique and it’s going to put a dent in the universe. In the lead-up to launching Cognician we are working with local and international corporates, publishers and universities who are the early adopters of this potent technology that was born in the Western Cape. We are looking for a visionary web developer who wants to contribute to something insanely great. We have a lot of web design and development to do for the content in the Cognician app, as well as for our website.
What do you need?
Some design skill. Enough to be able to create new page layouts from an initial core of designs. The ability to treat images for web consumption. The ability to code standards compliant with HTML/XHTML and CSS. Also, the ability to test in all modern browsers ( Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE8, Opera). Icon design skills, Javascript skills and English language writing skills would be pluses. (We’re not looking for JM Coetzee, just the ability to string together a coherent sentence.)
What will you get?
On the tech front…
Familiarity with web development Firefox plugins: you’ll validate markup and CSS using the Firefox Web Developer plugin, and measure page and server performance using Google’s Page Speed Firebug plugin and/or Yahoo’s ySlow Firebug plugin. Familiarity with server-side scripting languages such as PHP and Ruby on Rails; you’ll be able to work with server-side templates with confidence. Familiarity with search engine oriented concepts and techniques; semantic html tag usage, the role of no-follow, etc. Familiarity with source control systems such as Subversion.
On the business end…
You’ll get to learn from a small team of dedicated visionaries who have put everything on the line to create something new. If you ever want to learn what it takes to start a new web business, this is the place.

The internship length is variable based on your availability and periodic performance reviews. All other job details will be tailored on a case-by-case basis.
