Hi Guys.

I want to have a fully managed server at a ISP. The ISP need to provide the hardware, etc. Here's a high level requirement

- Ubuntu server as the operating system
- Full daily backups
- 4 Gigs ram
- RAID configuration on hard drives.
- Full remote desktop and root access
- I will install and configure software. i.e. (mysql, bugzilla, cvs & drupal)

Can anybody give me some tips, experiences and what reliable ISP's are out there that I can contact for a quote. I've already email webafrica and mweb, and webafrica's cost is R3419 and mweb's R3495. So far, mweb supplies more kit for the cost (more ram & cpu power).

Thanks guys,
M

The amount of traffic that you plan to push also has a significant impact on the price in the South African market. What sort of volumes are you expecting?

These are the only ISP's I'd currently consider doing dedicated hosting with:
IS, VerizonBusiness, DataPro, Hetzner, Adept, Sentech, Imperial Online
Dont know what WebAfrica, Afrihost, and others offer, but i'm sure they're good too
I'd stay away from Mweb... only had hassles with them. Maybe their service for dedicated hosting is different, but their shared webhosting support sucked.

- RAID configuration on hard drives.

What is capacity of the hard drives, what is the CPU (s) specifications and I would assume this is a locally hosted server?

Try Afrihost

Ditto. After contacting various local hosts, we settled for Afrihost. They have standard packages, but can configure the hardware at a once-off cost for the components. E.g., we required 1TB HD space in RAID 1 configuration, and they only charged us for the disks, no additional monthly fee. Support is also good. Hetzner won't do a customized configuration, unfortunately, since we are very happy with the shared hosting for years now. Afrihost uses the IS data centre in Bryanston.

Hey, this is what they quoted on their website...
Mmmm... They quoted me for the Host Serve - Commerce package. Only difference is my spec said 2GB RAM instead of the 4GB on the website and my spec is 25GB traffic p/m instead of 20GB on the website. They quoted R4700 for the installation of Red Hat Linux, R5840 once-off installation fee. How that equates to the total setup fee of R1795 they quote on the website is anyone's guess

I thought all is free and equal in the world of Linux, do you have to actually pay for a RedHat license?

Most *nix based solutions are indeed free, however there are some very mission - critical servers for organisations that need additional support from the vendor itself. These businesses don't want to have to rely on Google searches and forums for answers - they want to have a central point of contact for all problems and this is fully understandable.

Most businesses wouldn't think twice about dropping the money for this kind of additional support, however it is fine to go for CentOS etc for the average client.
