Future of computing?

Nah, Macs and PC's will stay the way they are for the forseeable future. The iPad will evolve into a more powerful package and that's the future of computing.

Don't wait, just buy a iMac now and then an iPad when you have more money. Apple is the future of computing.

First of all if you can wait why not wait? Technology moves really fast and it is ALWAYS better to wait if you don't need it right now. Secondly, that thing of iOS apps running on OS X will not happen, having a trackpad and having a touch based screen is 2 different things. Also, these people that predict obvious things like "OS X will become more like iOS" are really working on my manboobs.

That's all.

Just get your iMac. I'm being lazy today so didn't read everything but until it's a fact, it's an opinion which means bugger all (including mine). :)

There really is no reason in waiting if you want it.

I have a macbook pro, bought it october 2007. So it is not one of those nice unibody ones. It still runs fine, but with only 2GB RAM and a 120GB hdd, I am struggling. But not THAT bad, guess I can wait for one more year and see what happens.

I think you can solve your problem by just getting a new iMac with 8GB RAM and 2x 1.5TB drives.

That would be nice, I just don't have the cash for that!
Definitely going for the 27", 2.8GHz i5, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD (thinking about 2TB), ATI HD 5750 with 1GB. Did a quick check, if you build your own PC with similar specs with a nice 27" monitor, you are going to pay about R2000 less, but then you are stuck with Windows...
Just waiting for the prices in SA, then decide if I am going to import one.

Depends if you one of those people who has to and can afford to have the latest in technology, people still use run win98 on old Pentium's, I have vynal records as well as CD's and mp3s. Window's XP has more use worldwide than Windows 7.. Some things work better and will last longer...

True that, I mean who wants a Windows 7 64bit PC with 3TB RAID storage and 8GB of RAM. Its the uncoolest thing to have at LAN parties :p

You can have 10TB RAID storage and 16GB RAM, two intel i7's, two 27" monitors and the best graphics card that money can buy, but if you run windows, you will still suck and people will laugh at you.

I think you can solve your problem with a good SSD. It will make your laptop astonishingly fast.

Yeah, I guess its better to play games on a Mac - I sux.

It is strange to me how people find a Macintosh "cool". I guess it kindof has to do with the whole "minority" thing. Don't get me wrong i'm all for OS X but not because it's "cool". Also, seems to me these LAN parties are only for the "cool" kids. To bad for me as i'm still "uncool" even though i have a Macintosh. :P

Very interesting read. I want to buy a new iMac, but after reading this I think I am going to wait for another year.
What are your thoughts?

It's not that simple to merge touchscreen technology with the desktop; Microsoft has tried with windows 7 (and failed); Apple is known to succeed where others have failed (iPad), it won't be easy but I'm sure they'll try their best to surprise us.

Dedicated desktop computers won't die quickly; your investment will still be valid for years to come; neither Apple or Windows would risk alienating their loyal customer support bases by stopping one technology and moving onto something incompatible. What more likely to occur is that the new devices will have new technologies built in that the older computers cannot take advantage of (look at the iphone; 3gs introduced more RAM, speed and compass; 4th generation introduced more RAM, speed, better display and gyroscope)

Apple is busy with the new OSX evolution; this will most likely be launched sometime next year (http://www.appleinsider.com/article...r_for_revolutionary_new_mac_os_x_feature.html)

As regards new equipment:
1. It's highly unlikely the workhorses iMac or MacPro will be altered as that just happened;
2. Macbook pro will most likely get an upgrade later this year (Apple appears to be moving to ATI; October or November, before holiday season)
3. iPod Touch and other iPods (around October this year, inline with the iPhone 4)
4. Apple TV (lots of rumors; expect something in this space either late this year or very earlier next year)
5. iPhone (not likely until 2012; however expect additional US carriers e.g. Verizon?, Sprint?)
5. iPad (most likely 1st or 2nd QTR 2011); expect things like Gyroscope; Retina Display, more RAM and facetime camera.

You do make a number of valid points. I also doubt if they will completely change the iMac. I just don't want to buy an iMac now, and then in five months time they change the entire thing! That happened with my MacBook Pro, bought it, and about six months later the unibody ones came out...
But I guess that is part of life, you have to step up and buy, can't always wait, then you will never buy...
So, when the new range launches is SA, I will get myself one...

iPad is a content consumption device (like a PSP) and not a real multi-function computer. That won't change.

Computers will be with us for decades. A small minority of rich hipsters with nothing better to do will buy iPads - but they won't even replace the netbook never mind the notebook market - simply because the iPad is so expensive and so limited.
