Future-proofing your PSU upgrade

Nobody mentions the security offered by quality power supplies during power grid instability. Premium psu's can take surges and di, protecting connected parts... That alone is worth it!

Name brands should also have been mentioned. A 500watt Corsair is ten times better than than a 585watt Gigabyte Odin.

My Odin 470watt kept my HD 4850 running for two years flawlessly . Now I've sold it.

But it worked really well, and always kept running through small power trips.

Think the PSU-hype is overrated.

Exactly, the few rands insurance you pay for that extra self-protection circuitry is well worth it. The cheap no-name PSUs I used in the UK did not last long on Eskom's grid!

From personal experience a cheap PSU ends up costing you in the long run. I have a 700watt PSU that cost me a ton of cash 4 years back and still powering a core i7 with a sli setup. Before that I went through 3 generic 500watt PSU, each lasted no more than 4 months.

Also I have seen what happens to cheap PSU's when they get a hot (aircon failure) , having 30+ PSU's blow in the space of 24 hours.... never again

I find the this article very poor, cause the author didn't really go into details.
When choosing PSUs I go like "Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, Antec" those always have a great testimonials, and are rated has top brands.
Myself, I own this power supply, it is a great one, I have done many research before buying it and choose it because it was recommended for 3 way SLI with the GTX580 which I'm planning on building next,it is 80+ Gold Certified, it is Nvidia and ATI certified. It was top recommended with the Corsair AX1200 which is little better, but quite expensive (+ 2 years more Warranty). I saw an article where this PSU was running GTX580 in 4 way SLI and was stable, though 4 way SLI requires a minimum of +1600 Watts. Antec HCP 1200 was rated best performing PSU in some reviews, some preferred this PSU to the AX1200. This is a value PSU and I got it for R 2,176.
