Gaming rig for MMORPG on a budget.

How does the FX-4130 & FX-6300 vs i3 4130 stack up against each other?

GPU will probably be 6670 or GTX630 initially.

Wrt to MBs it needs to be uATX and currently looking at ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 AM3+, any other suggestions?

This is needs to be done on a budget, is not for me and not in SA (UK).

On a budget, the AMD FX-6300 will work great. But, the Intel i3 is also good. It will come down to the prices of those 2.

GPU: 6670 above the GTX630.

Both are good but I'll go with the FX-6300 because its got 3 times the cores compared to a i3 and the more and more games will use multi cores.

Yeah definitely the fx-6300 and 6670.

Yeah, it's for my brother in the UK and I just sent him a mail to go with those options.

Now if anyone has any suggestions for other uATX motherboards please speak up! :D

Well, you budget is super low, so just go for the cheapest uATX (mATX as we speak of here in RSA).

If your brother hasn't decided already, picking up a HD7730/R7 250 instead of the HD6670 would be a much better bet for driver and game support moving forward. If he can afford the R7 250X, even better.

Considering your hardware choice, a socket FM2+ motherboard and the Kaveri-based A10-7700K would also be a good fit because it would perform slightly better than a similar system with the FX-4300 and a HD6670, provided you use DDR3-2133MHz RAM.

Thanks, passed that on to him.

Do you mean/typo FX-6300?

Can one use PCL3L-10600R DDR3 1333 ECC dimms (samsung 2GB each) on a Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard? He's already got this ram from a server.

Web site states "4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 MHz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory"

If this ram can be used he will spring for a R7 260 due to the savings.

Nay, he cannot. ECC support is only on a few 990FX motherboards and I don't think you'll ever get it working on a consumer board at the low-end like that one.

Find some cheap, reliable DDR3-1600 RAM and spring for a HD7730/R7 250 or HD7770/R7 250X if the budget allows.

So why would the website list ecc ram?

It may just be an error. I don't see any ECC modules in the memory compatibility list which was recently updated, which is why I'm reasonably sure that it doesn't support it. Its better just to stick to normal RAM anyway and avoid any issues or going over budget which I'm sure he doesn't want to do.

Like I said the ECC ram is existing and available at no cost so it could be a saving.

I did some googling and this board does indeed support ECC RAM, found some forum threads with people running ECC RAM on this board.

There are also ECC configuration option in the BIOS according to the manual.

Yes Asus does not list any ECC RAM at all but the board & bios definitely supports it. No idea why they don't include ECC RAM in their lists.

Huh, interesting. Then perhaps it's there, but ASUS doesn't do any validation testing to see if it works. I know my board supports ECC memory but the QVL doesn't list any ECC modules which work either, so it becomes a bit of a lottery.

Proceed with caution if your brother plans on going this route, then. I'd still stick with consumer RAM.

He already has the ECC RAM which he got for free from a couple of servers he was given. So if it does not work it's not a train smash.
