Gaborone - would you?

If I could get a job in Gabs I would seriously consider it...

TBH I am on the verge of actively considering leaving this country. I do very very well for myself here, and love the country but my faith in this place coming right in my life time are starting to dwindle (as much as I hate even saying that)

I'm in the same place as you I think. I came back to SA in 2004 because I had hope for the future... but that hope seems to be fading.

I've never left the country actually, because I've always had hope... but yeah, the hope she is fading slowly.

It has nothing to do with the citizens of Botswana. It is government policy. This is no way implies that the majority of citizens agree with it.

Well...she is the only per I have ever met that was from Botswana...so I really would not know what the majority are like when it comes to that. One thing is for sure...I would not go there and put it to the test. Just like I would not go to the Middle Earth and put it to the test there.

Every country has its good and bad points. This still sounds better than here, where bribes would be solicited.
The Botswana govt is apparently pretty repressive.
I guess if you like bending to authority and sacrificing some freedoms you should be ok.

someone's been watching too much LOTR. :erm:

I heard that foreign nationals cant purchase property, is that correct ?

How hard is it to get citizenship ?

10 years before you can apply for permanent residence.
Non nationals no property. But non nationals can start a business and the business can buy property...
They are slowly getting more progressive in terms of immigration but they don't want hordes of non productive types, obviously.
Work permits are now renewed for 10 years for instance...

I always wonder what people are on about when I read statements like this.
I've spent some time travelling through Botswana and there was never a time when there was something that I could do in South Africa that I couldn't do in Botswana.
Same goes for the UK, Australia and New Zealand... ooohhh nanny states ... but what exactly izzit that you want to do, and can here in SA, that you cannot in any of those countries? What freedoms are you talking about that I would be expected to give up?

I like Botswana, I did some work there a while back and the people are awesome. I would rather live there than in jhb, but anywhere that doesnt have a sea doesnt really work for me.

In Australia my uncle got fined for trying to paint his own house. The government believes in protecting the poor painters income. In America my wife's uncle was not allowed to cut down a tree when he built on a garage as the neighborhood residents association said no. Hence he can't drive a car into his nice new garage despite the tree being on his property and being his tree. A neighbor ignored the association and cut down a few trees only to be sued and fined for a ridiculous amount of money. Seriously, the nanny states are annoying. Still, compared to the crime wave we are experiencing in SA its nothing.
