It seems plausible. This wasn’t a routine assignment. Gadaffi valued his carcass highly and had plenty of money to pay for undivided attention. R5m each would have been nothing to him.

It's only plausible in the movies. He could pay a Private Military Company a Billion Trillion dollars and they'd still pay their operators an industry rate. The best of the best would cost around $1000 a day for that protection job.

I highly doubt they were paid R5m each. I don't know where that figure comes from but it may be the value of the entire contract to the PMC. The per diem for the operators would have been in the region of $600-$1200 a day at most. And that buys a primo tier-1 PSD.

+1 for accuracy there mate.
Although it has to be added that we are talking about a dictator trying to flee for his life. PMC had the upper hand in this negotiation. It CAN be possible that they leveraged this angle towards payment.
On the flipside of that, it's not too often that the PSD's get a cut of that "bonus".

We are both retired sadly. Him to personal problems, me to injury and no longer able.
I still do a small amount of consulting every now and then though... not in this scale of events, but to local security interests and such.

Their jobs were to body guard Gadaffi. After the NATO airstrike this became difficult. There was nothing they could do except die with Gadaffi. They chose not to. Their ‘agreement’ with Gadaffi didn’t have a clause where it said, “Suicidal service is mandatory. You are expected to die hopelessly and meaninglessly in defence of the client”.

I take it you only have movie experience of actual combat situations.
Being bombarded by an airstrike doesn't exactly afford you the time and convenience to huddle together nice and neat and proceed in a single-file line to the nearest kiosk...

Amazingly, 19 got out (probably out of 19)... not one was near enough to the guy they were paid to protect to drag him along.

You tell us then - what is the proper procedure to follow when the guy you're paid to protect is being attacked (air-strike)

I've taken a bullet or two for dragging someone out of danger. Bullet is very survivable...

Taking a bullet or 2, and neutralizing the threat, that's the objective. So, exactly how many Airstrikes do you think the average man can "tank"? And then still stand up and with minimal weaponry at his disposal, neutralize the threat?

EDIT-in-Afterthought: There is a fine line as a merc, between doing your job, being brave, and going home in pieces packed in a plastic bag...

The following is merely opinion and speculation mixed, as the facts are not available yet for perusal.

Being a staged attack by NATO, one would believe the rebels weren't far off at all. Probably within danger close. (Not like NATO gives a crap about collateral in this case, imo).
It is very likely that Gadaffi was pulled and evacuated from targeted zone by his guards. Not knowing his specific training, but assuming nonetheless, he probably panicked and ran. He was found by the rebels where he was hiding in a sewer outlet pipe.

Upon the capture of Gadaffi, the mercs truely had no further recourse at all. Killing an entire mob of armed rebels along with civilians mixed in, is just not an option at all.

There is of course also the paranoid alternative, where they were all briefed to allow him to get captured...
Just remember that these mercs did not work for Gadaffi. They work for a PMC. Gadaffi is not their boss, merely their mission.
Exactly what the mission details are, will only ever be known to those involved.
