Galaxy A5 (2016)

Put in R200 more and get the Huawei P8 Lite or go withe the Xiaomi Mi4 for R3799.

Microsoft Lumia 640 @R2699 from MTN (insider W10M is extremely stable) and buy a couple big mo3rse bags of marshmallows to devour

edit: NVM.. only 5"

None of the phones mentioned will see Marshmallow (probably) ... P8 Lite not HD and not really available anymore (good luck finding one) ... Xiaomi Mi 4 doesn't have SD card slot.

Was in the exact same boat. I was on the verge of buying the Smart Ultra 6 but eventually went with the dirt cheap Redmi 2 Pro for R1900 ... too many new phones on the horizon to spend anything more on older tech now.

P.S Except for the lack of accessories I'm extremely happy with the Redmi. Should keep me ticking over for a few months.

My other option recently was to get a second hand Galaxy S5, around R2000+

Also quite keen to play with the new A5 :)

Compared to the old one, the S5 is the better phone

Ja, the S5 seems good value if there no scratches etc. even if I have to pop in a new battery.

If you can find a good S5 that would be a good option indeed ... funnily when I was looking all I could find were white versions (which I absolutely loath)

Me too, there where some "bargains" but the rest seem to want over R3500 to R5000 for their used devices, crazy.

I have an S5 but it won't be for sale until next week :D and it's got a fair number of scratches.

At the end of the day, I'm assuming that the new A5 will cost double the price of a used S5 - that's why I only buy used phones :)

You need to be careful... There are many fake Samsungs out there. Definitely a better value proposition, especially if you change phones as often as I do :)

Yeah true, haha nice. :p

EDIT: Just buy from a trusted seller.

Hisense KO launched this week for R3999. Looks solid. Unsure about frequency or any updates.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 also launched for R2999 this week.

Thinking about looking at LG G3 for R3000, seller claims unused.

I can only think to install cpuZ to check if its legit or not.
