Galaxy Camera revealed from Samsung

We have to admit that when a tipster contacted us and told us about a Galaxy S III-based point-and-shoot camera, we were a little skeptical. Doubt has been replaced by excitement, however, as Samsung showed just that at its IFA event – meet the Android Jelly Bean-powered Samsung Galaxy Camera.

Our tipster hit the nail on the head on most specs – including the 4.8″ screen of HD resolution. However it turned out that the Galaxy Camera is rocking a Super Clear LCD, instead of a Super AMOLED screen.

We’ll get back to the Android side of the story in a moment, let’s first go over the juicy camera details. The Samsung Galaxy Camera has a 1/2.3″ 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, a wide-angle lens (23mm in 35mm equivalent) and 21x optical zoom. There’s also a pop-up Xenon flash.

It shoots 1080p videos at 30fps, but you can also do D1 (720×480) at 120fps. There’s HDMI 1.4 available to output photos and videos to a TV. You get 8GB of built-in storage, which you can expand via a microSD card slot.

There are several levels of automation when it comes to taking photos – Auto, Casual, Smart Pro and Expert. As you would expect, there are also extensive photo editing features on-device and the camera includes Samsung’s Share Shot feature we saw on the S III (it let’s you easily share photos with other Galaxy Cameras or smartphones).

There’s also “Best Group Pose” like on the Galaxy Note II, which works in a similar way to the Scalado solution.

The camera will automatically back up the photos you’ve taken to the cloud – which will be done over the extensive data connectivity. There’s Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and penta-band HSPA available with optional HSPA+, though you can’t make voice calls with either version (it’s a camera, remember?). Other connectivity features include Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and GLONASS.

Going back to Android, it’s 4.1 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz customizations and you get all sorts of apps that the Galaxy S III got, including S Voice, S Planner, a browser and so on. The Samsung Galaxy Camera is powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz processor.

You can, of course, use third party apps and services – like Instagram for those ever popular image effects and Dropbox for its own instant photo upload. You get those at the Google Play Store, which the Samsung Galaxy Camera has full access to.

The physical measurements of the camera are 128.7 x 70.8 x 19.1 mm and it weighs 305g. The battery has only 1,650mAh capacity.

The Galaxy Camera will be available in Black and White, but we’re waiting on more details like price and launch dates.

I kind of get this but.... 4.8" screen on a camera?? It's not even pocketable. I do like the idea of making an Android based camera, that makes total sense. But that screen size seems like a misfire to me. What is the market?
 
One must handle the device to really determine is "pocketability". I've very recently bought myself a nice new carry-everywhere camera. I did a lot of research as per normal and looked at many cameras on the web. I always use dpreview. One very clear lesson I again got was ... a photo on the web can never ever give you a real feel for the "pocketability" and handling of a device. From your web research you decide on a range of devices ... and then you go to a place like Orms and handle them ... and then you walk out with something not even on your list after all the research because it looked like such a "big, un-pocketable" camera on all the photos, but in real life it is a joy. This may well be the case here. Retract that extended lens and that thing may well be a lot thinner and more comfy in the hand than we think/judge for the pictures.
 
Well.... just looking at it, it appears to have quite a bit of depth and a large chin. SGS3 is roughly the same diagonal width but it's thin enough to not feel so conspicuous. Well, let's see, I was wrong about the Note's popularity so this could be an untapped frickin-monster-huge-camera-screen market.

I wonder why they didn't rather go for the internal (vertical) "periscope" zoom used by Sony on many of their cameras? I think Sony is going to come out with a similar device but with periscope zoom, and that will be a huge winner because we are talking optical zoom here.

I love the idea of putting genuine Android onto a camera, I can totally buy into that. Direct upload to Instagram/Facebook/whatever social media from your REAL camera - my heart skips a beat.

Very exciting ... but also very scary ... where all this is going. Consider now a tech like facial recognition that is well advanced/matured by now ... Add all this into a pot ...
 
Samsung demonstrates the Galaxy Camera in a 13 minutes video

Samsung released a 13 minute-long walkthrough for its Galaxy Camera Android-powered digicam. It’s really worth it if you don’t have a store with a demo unit, but you are considering getting the device.

In case you need a refresh, the Galaxy Camera features a similar hardware to the Galaxy S III flagship smartphone (4.8” LCD HD screen, a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, Mali-400MP GPU, 1GB RAM) and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

On the camera side, the Galaxy Camera offers a 16.3MP sensor and a wide-angle lens with 21x optical zoom. Xenon flash, image stabilization and 1080p video recording complete the list. You can find the full specs here.

The device offers everything but telephony. It has a SIM slot though and you can use a data-SIM for sharing your photos on the go.
