So i bought my girlfriend a gio to introduce her to android and for the most part its a pretty decent entry level phone, except the battery life.

The phone loses 15% charge in an hour with nothing more than two short phone calls being made.

What can be done to improve the battery life, will a custom rom help or will i need to load juicedefender, root the thing and load setcpu?

Undervolting the CPU is typically more effective for extending a phone's stand-by time. I'm not sure if there is much you can do to increase battery-life while in a call. Keep in mind that calls really do take quite some battery juice.

Same basically goes for all other power-saving strategies (like decreased brightness, juice defender, custom ROM). These mainly extend stand-by time.

Got 2 of them & ja battery runs down fast. But here's a few tricks:
Turn off GPS
Turn off high speed internet( ie let it use 2g rather than 3g)
& download easy battery saver from market,
Turning off backgroud data download helps as well.
Boosts the battery life, phone runs a bit slower but atleast its lasts longer.
PS. remeber to check for firmware upgrades (had to do it on a XP machine at work WIN7 doesnt want to update firmware for me)
