I have one. Only used it about 3 months before going back to my Gear S. For me a standalone watch with 3G makes more sense.

Definitely worth it, not just a gimmick, after a while you will feel almost naked without one. I got the S3 recently but had the S2 for more than a year, use it to track sleep, use it as a alarm without waking the house, of course notifications with your phone on mute. Then the health tracking and music control etc, so yeah definitely worth it.
