Hi Guys

Ok, so in the other thread I was going to get rid of my S2 but turns out my mom doesn't want it. Decided I would like to try a few of the custom ROMs that are available, but where to start?

From reading XDA half the weekend, what I understand is there is a "base" ROM that I can flash, and then install other ROM's on top of that. Am I understanding this correctly? i.e. Have the ROM's on my memory card and when I want to try the next one, boot into the loader and install it from there?

This also seems to be the best way to not "brick" the device.

Any suggestions for a first time custom ROM? I'm actually looking for something basic where I can install my own apps. I hardly ever use the apps that come with the S2 stock ROM.

GalaxyS2Root.Com has awesome video guides.

Basics here :

1)Root your phone (also puts CWM on your phone so you can install (flash) ROMS and Kernels etc from the bootloader)
2)Download the ROM you like (Get Rootbox or Ressurection Remix)
3)Copy it from your pc to the phone sd card.
4)Boot into recovery (CWM, bootloader, whatever youd like to call it) by holding Power+Home+VolumeUP
5)Backup current ROM
6)Clear data
7)Install ROM
8)Clear dalvic cache in advanced and clear cache in main menu.

Reboot and enjoy

Also, you can backup and restore apps and their data beforehand using Titanium backup

And Backup your current ROM before installing a new one.

Thanks for that Carr0t

Using Rootbox and its pretty nice. No apps loaded which I like, prefer choosing my own stuff.

Will run this for a few weeks and see how it goes.

Official cyanogenmod10 stable version is also now available
