Good Day Forumites :D

My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S2 which is a year old. We bought it off Gumtree sealed. In hindsight she realises that her impatience to upgrade and do this was a bad idea. She is on a Vodacom contract. It has been working fine until recently and now it does not connect to the network in any way. She has been on Icecream sandwich for a while, and when the problems started happening, I upgraded her to official Samsung Jellybean OS.

We tried different SIM cards and that does not work. Her SIM works in another phone and she has the latest Vodacom SIM (swapped a few days ago). We did a factory reset through the phone options and that did not work.

The problem seems to be the modem as the Wifi, bluetooth and GPS work. She cannot use the network (Vodacom) for data or voice. Could someone please tell me if they had similar problems as searching comes up with many topics but non the same as this one. The Vodacare shop after quick analysis says they would replace the SIM reader (I think SIM holder) for R280 and that it should fix the problem but it is not guaranteed. I feel that they are just saying something though are not sure of it.

Many thanks.

Hi Wasabee!

Can you download GetRIL on the S2, run it and see if the RIL and Baseband match. When i was having network issues on my S2 i found that ensuring that these 2 match helped. Since you are on Jelly Bean i found that using the I9100XXLS8 for both RIL and Baseband works best (am also on Vodacom). Try and get the app to download the XXLS8 RIL for you and see if that helps

let me know

Hey Powa!

Thanks for the reply, tried the app, the RIL was wrong though played around with it got it to match. I think I might have messed it up when trying to fix it.

The root cause seems to have been that some guy sold us a "sealed" S2 last year and now blacklisted the phone (people I spoke to said for insurance claims). Vodacum checked the contract for being blacklisted though not the cellphone. Stupid staff, honestly cost me a lot of driving and I asked them is it blacklisted (they said no).

Anyhow today's message kids is to get all the details of the seller of private sales and to never underestimate the stupidity of people.
