My wife has the Galaxy S4 cellphone

This "thing" keeps of freezing, running out of battery in two hours. Plug it in and then it says 80% battery.

It has the latest software (waiting patiently for kitkat)

Its another damn BlackBerry and is about 3 months old.

I do not want to take it back to MTN as we will wait and im sure a S9 will be out by the time they return it.

Do you folks have any suggestions??

Remove the memory card. The S4 battles with some memory cards. A process trying to read the memory card prevents the phone from falling asleep and thus drains the battery in no time.

Also, pull open the back cover, and check the other side of the battery, check to see if the serial number starts with 'BD'. If it does then it is a defect battery, take it to your nearest Samsung store and get it exchanged for free. It's a known S4 problem.

I would do a complete factory reset. Often a rogue app will cause this kind of behaviour.

Be warned though at you need to backup your data to the cloud or computer as a factory reset deletes everything but stock apps of the phone.

My freaking BD battery just started swelling tonight while charging, after almost a year of working fine. The damn screen is pushed out of the frame now. How the cover didn't dislocate first I don't understand. Goodbye Samsung, I will not be buying your products again.
