gambling addiction

Apparently this form of addiction is very similar to alcoholism in terms of consequence.
What is the drug though? Can't be the actual act of gambling itself or is it?
 
Specifically dopamine. Dopamine is known as the reward drug. Prolonged exposure to dopamine will result in your body building up a tolerance to it, thus forcing you to receive larger and larger doses to get the same high.

So in essence the compulsive gambler convinces himself that he's going to win the big one next. This in turn activates the production of dopamine? Does dopamine produce an actual high?
If this is the case one could argue that these folk are in fact not addicted to gambling but rather to dopamine.
I find this hard to swallow.
 
Yep, the "drug" is what your brain gives you, the "high". Same thing happens in sports and/or other activities you might be interested in, especially on the extreme side.

I used to have an addiction to gambling, it's pretty tough. Nothing life altering happened thank god, but the "maybe I'll win with the next hand" when you start to see you losing dismally is hard because you chase that "high" when you do win. I started keeping a record of win vs loss and that helped me to see how much I was actually losing vs winning.

Now my "high" comes from natural, cheap-as-hell, things
 
Some people see it as an easy way out.

Our new temp think s/he can retire on gamble money before qualifying.

I think the "drug" is the temporary "escape"-feeling experienced.
