Hi Trusty Forum members

I need advice please.

My 8 year old daughter just produced a brilliant school report and has twisted my arm to buy her a TV game Console.

She asked me for a Wii - U as she has played this at her friends and is familiar with it.

I went to makro to enquire about the Wii -U and Makro said that they returned all stock to the supplier as this item is a really poor selling item; and that Wii - games are scarce.

So advice please; which console do I buy for an 8 year old girl; since Wii - U is now ruled out.

X - box 360; Sony Ps3 or Sony Ps4 or should i wait for X - box One. My criteria is not the power of the console but rather the games available for an 8 year old; game selection and Content needs to be age appropriate.

For an 8 year old, I don't think you would go wrong with the Wii U. Sure, games might be scarce, but they are also available for digital download on Nintendo's eShop. It's also fully backward compatible with the Wii games and peripherals, so you have access to a huge back catalogue of Wii games. Nintendo's first party games are also very kid friendly, and there's quite a lot of games aimed at young kids to choose from in the third-party selection

Alternatively, you could pick up the Wii Mini, which you could pick up for just about a third of the price of a Wii U.

I would disagree.

As to why? The Wii U is simply a HDMI upgrade of the ageing Wii hardware. How aged? Well I emulate the original Wii on my desktop at 105% speed.

A better bet would be the XBOX. I sold my Wii because its a piece of junk compared to the XBOX.

Well 2 mistakes you made there.

1. WiiU is a huge upgrade over the Wii.
2. PS3 would be a better for a girl due the bigger range of genres.

This is simply not true. The Wii U is underrated, it's a fun console with off tv play which works great. Sure it won't get all the 3rd party titles but it will get the best 1st party titles.
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D World
Zelda
Smash Bros
Nintendo Land
Pikmin 3
Sonic Boom

These type of games are perfect for an 8 year old and you simply can't get these experiences on another console

While the wii-u is great and has some good games esp for kids, I find most retailers not stocking the console or accessories any longer. You will be better off with one of the other consoles. My choice would be the ps3.

Wii U will be your best bet for family based gaming as well as age appropriate. I would think that the PS3 makes more sense in the long term due to the amount of games it currently has.

*sigh* this is gonna be another xbox vs ps thread at this rate.

My advice is go with what she wants the most - if you think she is not making the best choice then take her to a store where she can try out the options and see the selection of games - at the end of the day she worked hard for her report and ideally should be rewarded with what she wants.

I'd get the Wii U - its family friendly.

Xbox/one is more about shooting and killing.
PS3/4 is fairly similar, although more rpg's.

I have all the consoles (except the Xbox one), Wii U is the most played.

for an 8 year old wii u definitely- nintendo is very kid friendly, or xbox with kinect so that she can play the motion controlled family games.

TBH, most people buy a Wii/U and then sell it after a month or two, it really gets boring. Get her a pc when she is older, the online community needs more female players.

xbox 360, my daughter loves all the kinect games, like that Adventure one and the dance games. Also a plethora of XBLA games to download that's kid friendly.
She's turning nine in a few months. She's been hogging my xbox for over a year now, she won't let me play

That should answer your question about the wii - u.
If it breaks 6 moths down the line, where will you take it?
Do any of her friends have a wii-u so that you can lend/borrow games(if not you're buying every one!)?

IMHO PS3 vs 360 is a moot point, take any one of them.
Since she's 8, she will not complain about graphics, controller and whatever like the rest of us fanbois.

Also their games are plentiful and I suspect cheaper than PS4/one

xbox 360 with a kinect. My 4 year old is playing kinect on 360 and she loves it.There is a huge library of kinect kiddies games that she will enjoy and when she goes to bed you can crank the FPS online. :D

I would personally advise either the PS3 or PS4.

Xbox, even with Kinect, does not really cater for kids under the age of 12. I love the xbox, but from experience, the ps3 would be the better option for kids. But with the Disney and Skylanders out there, you could get it on either console.

The Wii is also not a bad console, and have a lot of kid friendly games.

Also, remember, if you get the Wii U, all the Wii games on the market will work on the Wii U. Rather just go to more specialised stores other than Makro to buy games. BT Games, Incredible connection etc have got a wide range. Personally I would go to your gaming stores. But for a kid, Wii U is not a bad buy.

Please go and have a look at who is still stocking wiiu first before buying it.
I bought one last year for R999 at CNA
They no longer stock any Wii-u items. Add to that list IC, game, Makro (like u mentioned), DionWired has some stuff but not much, same for pnp hyper.

Go to BT games, they will definitely have the Wii U

But if you have ruled it out, then i would also say PS3, because of bigger variety for girls and you can also subscribe to PS plus and get free games every month, including AAA games.
