Game/console collectors thread

Looking to finally get myself an up/scaler. What are folks using here?

I'd love to get a Retrotink 4K CE, but it's 10 grand without shipping and import duties. The cheap option is one of the pre-assembled GBS Control units, these are much cheaper. They ship from China and AliExpress has a ton of them but I don't trust their shipping, eBay has a few too also from China and same concern with shipping.

Bobshop has a couple, but heavily inflated prices.

AliExpress is fine, are you in JHB ?

I've got a RetroTINK-2X Pro, OSSC and the RGBtoHDMI open source device for my old retro computers and consoles. Use all 3 depending on the device (I have about 50 different consoles/retro computers)

No, Cape Town. AliExpress doesn't tell you anything about how the item is going to be shipped and will probably land up in a post office somewhere.

I saw that one on TA - it's just a China drop shipper too and I'd like a device with SCART.

Ali / Temu / Shein come in directly here in JHB, they use 3rd party clearance agencies to speed up the process - however there is a charge involved depending on what the seller declares the item as ( fees )

Maybe Amazon ( international ) will have one ?

Not much of an upscaler but I bought https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VJ9RP6 back in 2021 for my PS2 as my bedroom TV dont have SVGA inputs.

Tried one of those PS2->HDMI jobbies waaay back and it sucked big time, will never reccomend them. Very happy with the Component (YPbPr) to HDMI Converter. Then again I am using it on a small 40" TV so up-scaling was not a req for me.

I just don't trust that it won't end up at a post office, especially when the item has "free shipping". it's impossible to find information on how they ship things and you can't change the shipping method on your order to use another shipping service.

I looked on Amazon, can't find any of the GBSC Pro models there.

I think I might just end up going for the Retrotink 5X Pro, they ship directly from their site and include the shipping and duties costs on the initial order. It does end up costing around R9k but it is one of the best devices you can buy and I think it'll cover all my bases.

Norra vok, R9k. You can get 3 retro consoles for that price.

Maybe the other options first?

Very pricey.

I’ve used these guys before, no problems.
That device isn't designed for video game consoles.

Great video I found explaining why these suck:

There is a guy on BobShop I've used before that sells the OSSC, it's way overpriced for what it is and just drop shipped from China too: https://www.bobshop.co.za/ossc-scan-converter-ps2-pc-engine-compatible-adapter-for-retro-game

For now primarily PS2 (playing PS1 and PS2 games) but later also N64 and possibly GameCube too. But this rabbit hole is deep for retro game collectors, so that's an open-ended question 😅

It’s up to you which one you want, sometimes going and buying the expensive one compared to cheaper one might seem a little excessive when the cheaper one does the same thing :) lol

I know how you feel tho, when you get that itch and see it and want it soooo bad for your collection. 😊
