Game console or tablet

Erm, cerebus, what Qwikslver is saying is that a decent android phone can do anything that a tablet can do.

He was not saying that a WiiU can do anything that a tablet can do.

And I thought that you had a degree in English :p

Oh... :o I still say the 'it' was ambiguously directed there. I reckon that's about true then, an SGS3 is a lot better than a cheapo 7" Android tab or something like that anyway.

But a tablet is 5-7grand. Why the huge discrepancy?

I still say a WiiU. If you have a decent Android phone, it can do everything a tablet can do.

Apologies, I should have been more specific up front but only did so later in the thread. I am looking at an Android tablet priced at around R1.2k. It is a very decently spec'ed Chinese one from Ainol. It was discussed elsewhere.

This was what gave me the price range. When I saw the Wii advertised at around the same price it got me thinking, and hence the question.

That may be true but are you likely to leave the SGS3 at home for the family to enjoy when you're not there?

And that too has been my exact thinking. My SGS3 is my personal device and will not be left out of my sight, in fact, as a result of it being a work tool, it can't be as I receive calls and the like. As it is I get nagged to play a game on it while I am busy using it... :)

No that Ainol can't do anything beyond an SGS3. It's not even much good for playing games. If that's what your kids want get a minimum of a Nexus7 which goes for r2600 for 16gb at Esquire ex-vat. That tablet will become a bookend.

You reckon? I've been perusing YouTube and have seen demo videos of all sorts of games being played on the Ainol Crystal with, what appeared to be, much success. Now, I'll readily admit to not knowing which games really test a tablet but there was Need for Speed Most Wanted, Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and the like being shown. A few others that I have no idea of names. Also the benchmarking seemed to be ok. But again, I am no expert.

The intention was never specifically games but they would be a plus. Remember a 4 year old is easily entertained and does not need the latest games :) The 13yr old on the other hand is far more difficult to please! The SO would use it to browse the net and play around on Pinterest and the like.

Well no you'll be able to play games but for instance the Nexus7 has a gaming-oriented Tegra3 chipset which means top compatibility with every game out there including the latest and most graphically intense ones like Horn, Shadowgun, etc. However if it's just for kids' games...... well..... look for a 4 year old I'd say an iPad2 is going to give you a FAR better gaming selection at that age level than any Android tab. My wife's iPad has a folder with probably 20 individual games and learning apps and the kids are crazy about it; it's extremely high quality stuff like Thomas the Tank Engine, Dora, Stella and Sam, Sesame Street etc.

Another thing which might sway more towards the tablet is the price of the games... 1$ or free for tablet games and 500 madiba's for a console game

Reluctant to publicly admit this but for both I would factor in the availability of eyepatch-wearing, "Arrrrggghhh"-saying, rum-drinking games.... :)

They can all be swash buckled to accept bounty... with varying degrees of difficulty.
