Game Mini-Reviews

I finally picked up Resident Evil 4 Remake again after having quit previously. What made it “better” this time was playing it as a shooter with Ashley being immortal

The initial parts I liked were everything up until the castle; the castle ruined it for me, and the island section was just awful. They shouldn’t have added the island with the Marine angle that was just too much, and IMHO they should have stuck with what they had before the castle…

I didn’t like the shooting - just too much ****ing shooting, to the point where the game flat-lined into something trying to be what it clearly wasn’t. I prefer the more original approach: actual slow-paced tension horror-gore-porn, whereas this remake had no horror in the end feeling more like next 50x odd "Ahí va esos" lining up for you to W/shoot through.

One can’t deny that, looking at the OG and this remake, they did a good job. Looking at the OG, I can already see why this felt like a bland shooter.

That said if I have to rate it:
7/10 before castle
6/10 castle
5 going 4 / 10 island

Which reminds me… Jesus, the Ashley parts versus how much better the Louis parts were. In fact, I really thought the Louis sections were great as partner play.

As a Resident Evil game, it’s highly debatable whether it’s any good, and the same goes for it as an action shooter. If I have to rate it purely as an action shooter, I’d probably give it a 6.5/10

So I’ve tried the following continuations of Resident Evil. I guess you could also say they are shooters set in a Resident Evil game. You could also ask what a Resident Evil game is. There is surely a market for both, and it would probably be best if Capcom dedicated two routes: one focused on shooter and action and another on real tension, horror and payoff.

This brings us to Separate Ways, a DLC for Resident Evil 4:
By now I realized that shooters set in a Resident Evil world are not my thing. I prefer more tension, more scares and more horror. So it is no surprise that I did not like it. For me it is even worse than Resident Evil 4 remake. It seems to want to be a fun shooter. It gives up even more of what was in the remake and adds even less if any horror or tension.

What initially tanked it for me was that the voices do not match the characters, and it is not just Ada. Then it is basically replaying Resident Evil 4 from another point of view, which I already did, with some so called smart additions like ringing the church bell. These did nothing for me.

So I cannot recommend it if you do not like shooter style Resident Evil experiences. Which is kind of funny thinking of F.E.A.R.
