Are these points out of anything?

At one stage I thought they were all out of 1000, but I have some low numbers (300 points) of games I've completed :/

Arcade games have a maximum of 200GS while full retail games have 1000GS or 1250GS if there's additional DLC content.

A full gamerscore for a game doesn't just mean getting to the end. For example I "finished" GTA and I only had 480points for it. CoD4 you can only get half the points if you finish it on Veteran, some games require you play ranked multiplayer etc etc.
