Why Game Companies Stopped Making Games - How Money Works

That video is super clickbait. Game companies aren't the problem, people will happily continue to saddle up their horse armour. Just because that market isn't vocal doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. Those who complain are simply the loudest. The same can be said about the Web3 space, NFTs and the metaverse, opponents by the ‘millions’, yet, money bigger than them goes into it. It is only that some proponents miscomprehended that which they support.

Just like ownership is being relegated to the past, because people will happily subscribe. The problem is that this service can be taken away due to any reason but because its proponents haven't been exposed to this, they happily accept the current conditions until the day comes, they pull out their hypocrisy hats.

Not to take away, on-topic, that 'games' are still being made, and some very good ones too, it is only that people have an apple to gut with AAA developers and publishers, or whatever AAA means to them.

For surprise mechanics, people love gambling and will always do.

The masses gets what the masses keeps on paying for.

I remember replaying one of the older medal of honour games thinking fairly recently thinking that that it's campaign seemed endless.

It is not that the the video is clickbait it is just that it has come to the wrong conclusions in some instances. The assumption that game developers aren't making games anymore is entirely wrong. They still make games, just the release cycle has changed over the years. It can take 4- to 5+ years to make a game. You would expect that with technology that development of games should be easier than ever, and while technology has improved making things easier it has also made things equally more complex. Millions of polygons, much larger worlds/levels and infinitely more complex textures and animations. This has also resulted in much larger teams working on projects, a huge AAA game could easily see a team of 100+ plus or more people working on a project. This increases production costs a lot.

There is also a lot less studios as smaller studios either got absorbed into larger companies or simply ceases operations, much like the movie industry. The benefit however is that it has given rise to indie developers that filled the void in both the movie and game industry. More games and movies are being released than before. While some game/movies of are of questionable quality there are some gems to be found.

Much like movies, games also have various fads, 2000's saw the rise of zombie games and WWII games, 2010 saw the rise of multiplayer games and fantasy games and RPG in general. It is just that studios, have longer production cycles, increased costs and switched over to producing titles like multiplayer games that offer a steady stream of income.
