sup gents,so after swearing I'll never return to computer gaming, I decided after a about two years on my xbox to return to to the good old loyal and humble computer for gaming...I know, I know xbox rocks..but just getting tired of the over priced games and blah blah the reason for me switching back is not what I want to ak you guys about....Okay, here is the deal, my Nvidia 8800 ultra freaked out, died and is not graphting anymore, I have a SLI capable GFX motherboard, what I want to know is whats the best graphics I can get for 5 grand? I'm considering Nvidia's GTX285, but wondering if two 9800gt's SLI wont give me more bang for my bucks..??

Why not save some money and just get a 4870? At R3300 it's great value for money and you really don't more power than that.

I wouldn't recommend an SLI configuration except for bragging rights. The performance gains for SLI vary between games. At times you will only get a 20-30% performance gain over a single card, other games will give you a 60% gain.

He is asking for the best solution for 5k ati fan boi :p

2 x 9800gtx+ in sli would be awesome but if you can get the gtx 280 or 285 that would be just as good if not better due to single cores scaling better. O yes and it would beat a 4870 for 3.3k, you could also look into the 4870x2 since you have 5k to spend.

Now if you only want to spend 3k then yes listen to the ati fanboy and buy the 4870. Of course you need more power than a 4870, its like saying you do not need more than a 8800gt to play games like crysis and farcry :), of course you do because you want to put AA and AF on you want to run games as high as possible, i am not sure how a 4870 will go against 285 or 280 or even the 4870x2 in terms of playing games full with some AA but i am sure it will struggle :).

2 9800gt's in sli would not be worth it. Performance would more or less equal a single 4850 at twice the cost.

Well since u got SLI...dont waste the board...

Get a GTX285 and get another one later...not only do u get better game performance and u get bragging rights :p

Or wait til april for the HD4890...that will be a beast and a half :D

hmmm....ok gtx285 is then.......went for a gigabit card through rectron, sad thing is its only ariving next week wednesday ((tears))...and then off to organise a LAN :)...but thank you okes for your advice...will maybe later on drop in another gtx285 just to keep the one i ordered company ;)

OMS dude did you just pay like 7 k for it?

Did you check the price difference between that card and the nvidia 295? rectron must be the most expensive vga card supplier in the country along with frontosa.

How much they charge for it?

So he paid +/- R2k more than he could've?

Say it's not so! That would be a mighty rip-off on a grand scale!

A quick search of local etailers resulted in a R5416,05 price find..

O i just checked the price list, wow their pricing has come down big time. Pretty decent price actually.

Go rectron its about time you stopped charging so much more.

Ya not by much though, i see though that frontosa have the 9800gx2 more expensive than the 285 :p
Also on rectron's pricelist you have the q 9300 400 bucks more than the q9400 :p
Wow and the 4870x2 is 1k more than the 295 which beats it :).
