Hey, I bought an ASUS ROG GL553VE GTX 1050 Ti gaming laptop yesterday and it was advertised as "ASUS ROG STRIX GL553VE Intel 7th Generation Kabylake Core i7-7700HQ up to 3.80GHz CPU"

I noticed it's been really slow for the specs, I had an MSI which I got three years ago that performed better, I am thinking of returning it.

Another thing is when I check the system specs it shows "Intel (R) Core(TM) i7 - 7700HQ CPU @ 2.8GHz 2.81GHz"

Is that right? Seems like there is 1GHz missing as it is advertised as 3.8GHz, or am I mistaken?

thanks :)

Base clock is 2.8 and with turbo boost it goes upto 3.8.

It boosts up to 3.8GHz

Gaming laptops tend to perform worse than their desktop equivalents from my experience. My i7 with a mid-range nVidia card and 16Gb RAM outperforms my brothers 20 000 Rand MSI laptop.

you have the 1TB hard drive in that model if i recall or did you go for the SSD or m.2

if the 1 TB drive it is a piece of crap and upgrade the hdd and use the DVD drive with a bay convert and pop the 1tb drive into that slot and get rid of the DVD drive.

They do, it's the nature of the beast.

If you can find a way to keep it cool, it should almost always be on turbo boost when gaming

But yeah, if you comparing to desktop equivalent, its definitely slower

Rare, will usually start getting throttled as the GPU runs hot.

The OP CPU:
The Cores are clocked at 2.8 GHz, but with TurboBoost they can go up to 3.4 GHz (Max Quad Core Turbo – all 4 cores active), 3.6 GHz (Max Dual Core Turbo) or 3.8 GHz (Max Single Core Turbo).https://www.ultrabookreview.com/14101-intel-core-i7-7700hq-benchmarks/
The all-core turbo hasn't changed much from the i7 4720HQ that I have in my laptop, I really want an upgraded GPU, drawback of laptops. :(

Using WebGL, my CPU hits 3.4GHz on all cores for a couple of seconds at a time.
It also shows off FF work on separating tabs, no lag in this tab due to the system being maxed in the other one.

I got the 1tb, thinking of upgrading to the 512gb SSD, is it a big difference? wait are you saying I can install an extra hdd into the dvd slot?

I have one off these laptops

so what i would suggest is go with a m.2 ssd https://www.takealot.com/samsung-960-evo-nvme-m-2-solid-state-drive-500gb/PLID43988324

Then for the extra storage you can keep the 1TB drive and move it to a drive caddy on the dvd drive , and get a 2nd SSD to replace the damn slow 1TB drive for those games and other stuff that needs a little extra speed in load times.

then get external enclosure for the dvd drive to run on the usb ,
below are some links i used to convert mine . and went from a potato to a gaming laptop.

If you get a hdd caddy for the dvd slot.
Besides that I think you also have two slots m.2 & nvme you can use for that particular type of ssd which is even faster than sata ssds.

Have a look here http://carbonite.co.za/forumdisplay.php?59-Storage-Drives should be able to pick up a 1TB ssd for the same price as a retail 512GB one.

What exactly is slow about it? And what are the specs of the MSI? I have a laptop with an i7 6700 HQ, and it's boss. It's no desktop CPU, but its still awesome.

And as many others said, and SSD is the way to go.

Format and reinstall with an ISO from MS.

These days they preinstall all useless kuk that makes it slower.
