Hi all

I am looking into buying a laptop, decent sized screen and HD mainly for gaming.
Im by no means rich so I also need to find one within a decent price range.
I dont know much about laptops or their prices, hence why I am asking here, but to set a benchmark I would like to play Skyrim on it without any issues, doesnt have to be on max settings, but not on low either, still want to enjoy the visuals.

Can anyone here point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

Honestly laptops ain't made for gaming. Dell can throw the most exotic looking hardware on a pc but it will still not come close to a desktop for a quarter of the price. Gaming laptop and small budget doesn't go together. Do you need to mobile or is a desktop not a option? I mean with the money you saved you can buy a psp portable or something

unfortuantely i do need to be mobile due to work, I travel quite frequently.
I was thinking of a psp at first, but I have a deep desire to play Skyrim! I loved Oblivion and lost many hours of my life to it, and it just looks awesome.
what price do you estimate I would be looking at?

They recommend a quad so you can look at other laptops other than gaming laptops.
The Toshiba Satellite P755-S5269 got a I7 920 quad core with a Gtx 540m gpu. Not the best but you'll be able to play it. Just remember your upgrade path is dead with a laptop. You buy now you buy a new one if you want to upgrade.

If you want to see how much a gaming laptop cost have a look here

Take a deep breath lol

Skyrim will do that. :D:D

mmmkay, just looked at those gaming ones, now thats what I was talking about when I said decent price range! Haha think ill skip those!
but thanks for pointing me toward the Toshiba, will look through the selection. It is quite a large sum to pay for something that will eventually be a large paperweight because you cant upgrade, but I guess thats the decision you have to make.
will ponder for a bit..

Buying a gaming laptop especially those expensive ones from Dell you either kak ryk or you have never seen a game on a desktop @1080p
For that price ill put together a decent rig, then buy a xbox, ps3, PsP, Wii and still have left over

Gaming laptops are expensive indeed... If you don't want to spend in the "gaming laptop" range, just check that the laptop has a decent GPU. Something like a GeForce GT 540M is great if you only want to do some casual gaming now and then.

Check out http://www.notebookcheck.net for in depth ratings on laptop GPU's. They even give average FPS for popular titles.

Totally agree. Best buy.

Some observations on that deal:
The 740QM is the older i7's, but it's still MORE than capable. You'll be paying much more for a Sandy Bridge processor so no doubt they're clearing out stock or something.

The screen doesn't have 1080P, but the upside to that is you'll be running games at native res. and getting awesome framerates with that 5870m. The 5870m is a modified 5770 desktop GPU, to get an idea go look at 5770 benchmarks and take about 5% off from the fps.

Will this laptop be able to play BF3 and on what settings?

I have a machine with comparable specs. I can run BF3 at high, BUT you'll get below 30fps here and there. I find BF3 on medium works best. Then again, I was running at 1080P, with that MSI you'll definitely be running BF3 on High at 1440x900.

As for other "new" games. No problem. High at 1080P on everything from Dead Space 2 to Batman. 35fps+ average.

P.S. Budget for an SSD. It'll have 3Gbps SATA II so don't look at the 6Gbps drives unless you have a reason to.

If you have the cash look at Alienware which is now owned by Dell. So you can buy them locally now.
