Hello, I got a budget of about R30k to buy a fairly decent gaming laptop. I scouted around and saw this one

A multitude of reasons.
1. They run HOT and consequentially are noisy af.
2. They are stupidly overpriced vs desktops
3. They dont perform as well as desktop's in a like for like comparison. i.e an i9 desktop processor is faster than the mobile version.
4. They are bigger, heavier more annoying to lug around than a normal laptop.
5. They age REALLY fast, they lose value faster than they age.

So yeah, buying a desktop plus a laptop would most likely work out cheaper and be the best of both worlds.

1. I have an Asus Rog G75VX (Yes old, and I'll hopefully replace next year with another Asus), but it has never run as HOT as you'd think. It's also less noisy than my wife's Dell Latitude business laptop when I play games.
2. Yes, and no. Seen the price of graphics cards of late for a PC? R25k and you'd get a very decently specced laptop for less than a PC.
3. Who cares. Is it that noticeable that you'd simply have to have a PC over a laptop?
4. That's kind of stating the obvious, right? There is a reason for that.
5. You don't sell your PC for a profit though, nor do you sell your laptop or any electronic device for that matter.

Sure you can't upgrade the GFX card, but you buy a gaming laptop for portability and gaming on the go using a fraction of the power. Again, go do some research and build a similarly specced PC compared to that Dell. You're looking at around R30k for the PC, so price-wise it's not that much difference to pay in for the laptop if you're looking for portability.

Different strokes for different folks.
 
Good luck finding stock of the hi end models.
I've ordered a msi ge76 raider, no stock in South Africa until end of November.

I would opt for the 11th gen cpu if going for intel the one listed above is 10th gen so already old.
GPU again with 10th gen it's likely a low TDP on the gpu which makes a huge difference.
I would recommend the RTX 3070 mobile.

Asus rog, msi gp & legion are great models and have sufficient cooling in place. Dell is more of a glorified office laptop really. All depends on your available budget.

Depends mate, have you seen the prices of 2nd hand GFX cards lately? I think they sell for more now than they did when new!

I second this but I have noticed the wootware notebook prices have jumped in price over the last few weeks (They also have a stock shortage at present). Having said that, you can get better bang for your buck compared to brand names currently on offer.

Why get a laptop over a desktop? If you spend a considerable time away from home it's just easier to lug a laptop in a back pack.

Can second, have a Wootbook with an RTX 2060, form factor is good, fans seem to keep it from throttling well (note there is office and there is gaming mode, office fans and stuff are lower db noise, I use it if coding without headset as moderately quiet as fans don't instant ramp up on burst loads).

Even on gaming mode, it's still a bit quieter than my old Lenovo Y5070 was, and is a little thinner than it was.

Hit the two year mark since I got one week ago, still seems as fast as when I first got it, only had two issues so far and they were sorted out by a BIOS update (hibernate was draining battery since hybrid sleep where it goes into hibernate wasn't properly swapping over once under 30% battery) and swapping out the CMOS battery (specifically since time lost, was an issue with Hyper V security violation on boot which caused an issue with some auto start-up apps in docker, dev problems). Use it for hours every day, both work and gaming, external keyboard, mouse and screen though.

I bought one of the first models of Wootbooks in 2018. A real plasticky Clevo rebrand (with absoutely abhorrent speakers and trackpad) but it was way cheaper than similarly specced name brands. It was exactly what I needed though (had one of the better mobile CPUs at the time). The screen stopped working on it about a year in, I had the 3 year warranty and just returned it and the fixed it super quickly.

3 and a half years in and it's still chugging along, although I must say I don't use it much at all seeing as I only used to mainly for travel which has been on the backseat for the past couple years.

Their new models seem much more premium.
 
I converted to the laptop lifestyle and docked to replace the desktop
10th gen I7 2060's not bad machines,but did you take a look at Ryzen alternatives? The Asus TUF ryzens run similar configs but 10-25% faster Ryzen 7's

Admittedly modular upgradeability does take a hike,so you need to re-sell to upgrade which can be bit harder but not impossible - i've gone from a laptop with 860 -> 970 -> 1070 - 2070 like that

Wootbook or check out amazon. I am also on the lookout just waiting for Black Friday... Like the HP omen, Legion, Asus G15 otherwise the razer blade 14 although it is overpriced

The 2019 one I got is a full aluminum alloy body, so yeah, became a lot more premium. I'd have been hesitant in regards to a plastic body, coming from the Y5070 that was already metal, going back to a plastic body is iffy to me besides weight. The heat dissipation on metal bodies is just a lot better, acts as a giant heatsink at the bottom.
