My CM Sentinel Advance stopped working for the 2nd time so time for a new mouse.

Logitech G9x
Roccat Kone [+]
R.A.T 7

Open to any other suggestions. I'll be using it for FPS.

PS. dont buy CM peripherals...

It depends on what your needs are. I recently bought a R.A.T 7 and it's on a completely different level comfort-wise from any other mouse I've used. The Rats are the only mouse types that can claim to be ergonomic since it's adjustable. There is no one-size-fits all. The only drawback for some (I've heard), apart from the price is that it's a heavy mouse, even with all the weights removed, but that's only because it's built properly. For me it's just perfect with 2 extra weights, and that sniper button is a godsend.

I've never been a fan of the Roccat products because they seem to, like the Razers, feel a bit flimsy and "cheap", even though they are anything but cheap. They're also designed for a palm grip (the ones I've seen, Kone etc)

The Logitech might be a good choice if on the other hand, you don't use a palm grip at all. I used to love Logitech products, they're quite solidly built (although not as good as the R.A.T) and last a long time. If I hadn't discovered the awesomeness of the R.A.T, I would have gone for the G9x myself. It's fugly but it does a great job.

Can the RAT be converted to either palm or claw grip? I'm not sure which I prefer having only played with a palm grip so far. I do think it looks pretty cool though. Out of interest what are the other mice you are comparing the RAT to?

I also get that vibe from Roccat and Razer, they always look very plasticky.

I like my mouse to be pretty light, I've taken all the weights out of my current mouse... Kind of a deciding factor for me.

Yes, you can make it longer and wider and use the higher palm rest (it comes with 3 palm pieces and 3 pinky rests). I used it like that for a while but then decided I prefer the claw grip so I made it short and used the low, smooth palmrest.

I used to have a Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse, and before that a Razer Copperhead and before that a Logitech G5. I've borrowed a friend's Razer Naga for a while and didn't like it much, all those buttons felt unnatural to use. In shops I've tried the Steelseries Ikari and Roccat Kone just for the feel.

I don't think the R.A.T is that heavy on its own, for example it's about the same as the Sidewinder when all weights are removed from both. It's heavier than the Copperhead but then that thing is insanely (too) light and plasticky. So if you like it Razer-style it might be a problem. The CM Sentinel is also on the heavier side iirc so if you're fine woth that it shouldn't be a problem. The R.A.T though has better feet and glides much smoother on a cloth pad than the Razers.

I've read about some tracking issues on certain surfaces... what do you use it on? I have the Razer Goliathus pad.

That sniper button sounds great, but its unconfigurable right? So I can't make it increase the DPI when pressed.. thinking BC2 tank mode.

I've read those too. They're wrong. It looks like it was an issue with the old/review version, which was fixed before it ever came to SA. The same people complain that the big pinky rest drags because it doesn't have it's own Teflon foot, but it does have one. The cursor does move a bit upwards when you lift the mouse off the pad but I've never seen a mouse that doensn't do that. People complain about all kinds of ****, like a keyboard where you can't press more than 6 keys at once.. :wtf:

I use the Cyborg G.L.I.D.E 7 pad with it, a perfect combo. It's a huge rubber and cloth mousepad (40x50cm) But I used to use the Cyber Snipa aluminium pad with textured Teflon top surface. It works perfectly on both, but the hard pad completely chowed up my Sidewinder's feet in about a year, so I didn't want the same happening to the RAT. Both are black so I don't know what the so called issues with dark mousepads are. It works on my wooden table just as well. Didn't test it on glass.

The sniper button is configurable, but only as a percentage of current DPI, 0-100% so it's always slow but you can decide how slow. There is a "normal" on-the-fly DPI switch (also configurable) within easy reach of the middle finger though so I normally use it on 3200 and then when needed in tanks etc i press the top side of the button to take it up to 5600.

I phoned the local PC shop and they have one so I will check it out tonight.

Might be a bit late here, but I am using the Prestigio PMSG1 and it is fantastic, and costs about R300. DPI goes up to 5040 and it comes with a pinky rest and weights. It also has ceramic feet which makes it feel so damn good on any surface. It glides everywhere. Works great for FPSs.

Better late than never... What have your other mice been?

Stay away from the Roccat, mine lasted a year before the buttons started giving trouble.

It was slowly slipping off the list already... your comment took it right off.

I really need a reliable mouse, my current (CM senitnel) has given me quite a few problems and some googling revealed that it has been giving a lot of other people the same problems.
I googled "(mouse name) not working" and got almost no hits on the RAT, a few on the G9x and quite a lot on the Roccat...
I am returning the Sentinel but will probably sell the replacement.

Yes.

Get the G9x.

With the Palm grip, the G9x will fit nicely, the RAT I found worked great for the Claw.

Thing is I've never used a claw grip mouse before, so not too sure which I prefer. With the RAT I'm thinking If I don't like claw grip at all I can just extend it to the max and go semi palm grip? Like a best of both untill I know for sure which I want... for future mouse purchases.

Why don't you test drive em?

I did and I went for the G9x, (I'm a Palm boy) because it was way more comfortable. I also found all the adjustments that you can make on the RAT meant there were a lot more things that could break. It also felt lighter and less "solid" to me.

You should test drive em, go visit someone who has a RAT and play 10mins of Black ops or whatever with it.

I believe the RAT mouse has been returned a few times. Unfortunately with online stores, they have to send it back to get checked before replacing, so choose wisely.

I bought the Logitech G700 a couple of months ago. Brilliant mouse. I had the G7 before that for about 6 years, now using it as my HTPC mouse. I can never go back to having a wired mouse, feels too restricted. The G700 also has a sniper button, 8 infact or whatever you configure it to be. :)

I have owned both the G9x and currently have the RAT7.

I hated the G9x with a passion. Very unconformable as I prefer the palm grip.

Sold that and got the RAT and have never been happier. Solid awesome feeling mouse.

It really comes down to comfort, if the G9x is comfortable for you then its by no means a bad mouse, just didn't suit me.
