Gaming on a Telkom 384k line?

Hi guys. I've ordered my ADSL line, and the installation is next week. I took the do level 2 package...R258 per month for 2 gigs per month. I'm gonna use it for a bit of surfing, and gaming. What is your experience when gaming on a 384 k line? Will I be wasting my time on this line? Can't really go bigger, budget & wife won't permit it! :D

DoBroadband = NoGaming... seriously its shaped and the latency ain't gonna be enjoyable. However, the line size is not a problem, 384k is fine - its the latency thats gonna screw you around :/
 
Thought not to frighten you, I'm actually gaming on a SAIX shaped line at the moment - its just that in certain instances it can become unbearable and I switch to my unshaped account.
 
Hi timgaul. Thanks for the reply. Should I rather get an axxes.co.za account? Rather cancel the telkom internet ISP part? Also, what ISP suggestions do you have?

get Yourself an unshaped account from axxess prepaid R120 per gig and it is valid for 12 months. I play guildwars on my 4 mb line IS account ping 1200 +- saix 400-600 +- unshaped 260 that is my opinion rather get 1 gig from do and then prepaid from axxess, you can also get prepaid local only from them i think is about 20 per gig gr8 for dota ping of 45 if you go throu local server

I would most definitely go for an Axxess unshaped account - they are definitely up there for gaming. However, this will cost more and you'll probably just get a smaller cap. So, just remember this cap affects your surfing and downloads - and for some games downloading happens fairly regularly.
 
Thanks.. So I think I'll go for a shaped 2 gig account from axxes, and an 1 gig unshaped pre-paid as you guys mention. (So I'm gonna just get the line, and not the telkom internet portion)

I'm gonna buy a d-link 2540 router, and I'd like to know how easy it is to switch from one login account to the next? I understand that the routers today gets configured via an http stack loaded onto the router itself, and you access this via http. Is switching between accounts easy?
 
It depends what you want to play, any of the local servers should be fine.

International WoW or FPS might not be.
 
Yeah, if your playing local then its fine, I also have a 384k line and it gets the job done. I don't playing any MMORPG's like WoW so I can't vouch for that. But a normal shaped account for local servers will do the trick. Also, if you plan on playing local make sure you make use of a program called Route Sentry. Will save you lots of international bandwith by routing local traffic through a local account and intl traffic via intl account. BTW, RS requires that you make use of 2 accounts, one intl and one local. For more info on RS just search these forums, lots of topics to help you out, otherwise just a question and anyone will be more than be able to help you out. :)
 
Locally-hosted games run fine with *any* ADSL. Seriously, they all use the same backbone folks... And shaping doesn't seem to impact on it at all.

Interntional games aren't really pleasant with anything in SA, but unshaped SAIX, Verizon, or that IS fibre thing are more bearable.

On the left "menu", there's a list of hosted games, if the games you want to play is any of them, well then, it will be great.

If you want to play games hosted overseas, well ... then you will probably have to get an unshaped account from the cheapest place you can.

To be fair, your real options are basically limited to Counter-Strike, Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2 and 2142 and Team Fortress 2.

The others... you might get a decent game on the odd Saturday.
