My son is wanting a gaming pc

If I do get him one I want to get with goods specs so that I don't have to upgrade it in the near future.

What component specs should I be looking at?

For a gaming PC, look at a minimum of like:
4GB DDR3 1333MHz 1.5V RAM
1TB HDD
Intel Core i5 2400
AMD HD6870 / Nvidia GTX560 Ti
Corsair CX500 PSU
Windows Home Basic 64-bit
22" FullHD screen (1920x1080)

Pada is pretty spot on. Just 1 thing, shop around for items as you can get a lot of the items cheaper from different shops.
