Gaming problems of the 90s

gaming in the 90s wasn't easy

No, and that's why it was fun. It wasn't like watching a movie with the occasional option to interact like you kids have today.

Can't even remember the DOS prompts to run a game or look for a file :o

C:/d
D:/dir
D:/frogger.exe

Bleh, something like that :D

Don't forget about needing to downgrade your screen resolution to 256 colors to play certain windows 95 games

How many youngsters are acquainted with these?

lol, In high school me and my friend spend days trying to get a network going between our pc's without those pesky terminators. Eventually someone told us where we went wrong and we got it going. I remember LANs where we had a box of NE2000 nics (ISA) and the first half of the evening we spent setting IRQs and addresses with jumpers.

Trying allsorts of tricks to get DOS to load high and allow maximum free DOS memory...

was fun :D

Then there was people installing HIMEM customisation applications, eh...

I tried searching some application I really cannot remember, but it was similar to SoftRAM.

Some games needed extended memory while others needed expanded memory lol. I had to help my cousin setup a multiconfig over the phone once, lots of fun :D

I still use my null modem cable often but not for gaming ;) Use to play ROTT,Duke Nukem 3D over the serial cable. In the days of XTs and 286s we played Retal and Battle Chess over the serial cable.

Remember how long it would take to use laplink3(or 5) to copy files over serial cable? Parallel was waaaaay faster.

These actually did work:
QEMM:

and

MEMMAKER command:

Pfft, without looking at the links above :

To load DOS high :

CONFIG.SYS
device=himem.sys
device=emm386.exe noems
dos=high,umb
devicehigh=smartdrv.exe (and all its assorted switches)
devicehigh=mouse.sys

I had a couple of customized CONFIG.SYS files - tailored to suit each and every game of that time (which I used to play).

When DOOM came out with the DOS extender, it was nice not to worry about conventional (>640k) memory anymore...
