Apologies if this is the wrong forum, I am new here and not too sure if this is hardware-related or gaming-related. I thought it should be here as it is considered a high-end gaming GPU and people here might be able to help.

I am busy spec'ing a gaming rig, but getting co-operation from PC resellers is like pulling teeth! I am looking for a honest, reliable supplier to build me a gaming rig, but do you think I could find one? I have been waiting on some for 2 weeks now getting me quotes! Really is it such a saturated market that business in this area has become a choice for suppliers? :confused:Anyway herewith my specs:

AMD Phenom x4 9600
Samsung SH-S223Q Lightscribe
Corsair Dominator 2GB x 2 (4GB
XFX NForce 750 AMD M/B
Seagate 500GB x 2
750W PSU
Sapphire ATI Raedeon 4870X2
A well-ventilated chassis (Amtec?)

Any ideas on suppliers are welcome...please help here.
I am also open to comments on my choices. I am mostly playing COD4/5 online and want to get going on Crysis and a few other f/p shooters.

Thanks people! Rudi

Is there a pressing reason you want to go the AMD route? If not, I would suggest an Intel based system for easy overclocking ability, as well as cooler running and lower power consumption.

The other specs look alright, though casing is something I can't comment on. What size screen do you have/plan to get?

Concerning suppliers, go to the Prophecy shop online. They come highly praised, and I've used them myself and they are great, maybe the best shop online in SA. There's also Landmark PC, as well as Digital Addiction, Sybaritic and others. AS for real brick and mortar shops, I can't give much help unfortunately.

That amd cpu might hold you gpu back a little.

Yeah, rather get the 9850 or 9950.

Besides that rather just get one 4870. For one not all games benefit from two gpus, but you can use the extra cash to get a DX11 card next year that will most likely perform the same as the 4870x2 anyway.

Also I don't think you'll need such a big psu. A Zalman or Corsair 600W or 650W will be more than enough.

Prophecy build pcs too.

Also take a look at www.pcint.co.za ,They normally have some really good prices as well just remember the prices showed on the site exclude vat.

I would go intel on the CPU,tbut thats jsut me. I would also hold out a month, intel are launching their new i7 range (nehalem) which is the fastest CPU range ever available to the public.

If you spending that kinda cash, wait for nehalem, get an X58 motherboard and 4Gb ddr3(its not that expensive anymore), and then get the regular 4870. You can always put another 4870 on later if u need it.

But, like qwikslver said, amd and nvidia will be bringing out new gpus next year, so rather wait for that than spend so much on a 4870x2.

Either way, the 4870x2 will be held back by the 9600 i think. If you dont want to invest in nehalem, and want a cheaper solution, then i would get an intel E8500, 2Gbddr2 and a 4870.

Intel will also be bringing entering the GPU market next year with larabee....

EDIT - and there not much point buying 2 500Gb harddrives now, its gonna take a while before u start using the second one, and by then cheaper and better HDs will be available.

Just like to add that if you get an AM2+ board you'll be able to drop in the new K10.5 chips in it early next year and you'll have a smoother upgrade path to DDR3 as the K10.5 chips also support DDR3.

Thank you to all that replied here. In the end I have been persuaded to go for the Dual Core E8500 due to its superior ability in handling games compared to the AMD. I was also told that it can be overclocked safely due to its manufacturing process (45nm).

I am still a little torn between the ATI and NVidia cards, as there are many opposing arguments for each type. My personal preference is NVidia, but looking at the 4870X2 I am convinced that a 280GTX will not hold up against a 4870X2. Considering prices its a totally different ball game. My recent quotes makes me wonder if I should not wait a while as prices just shot up in the last couple of weeks. Then again Xmas is around the corner...

What is the general feeling around motherboards for Intel CPU's? Should one stick to NForce chipsets with a 280GTX or is Intel's own better? And what if I go for the ATI GPU?

Many thanks for all the good posts! Rudi

XFX make mobo's ?

hmm....rather get a gigabyte. there's one with 4x DDR3 slots and 2x pciX16 for R1800. (8 SATA's, and crossfire support)

ATI GPU, 4870 and 4850 are the best bang for the buck now. Please mebbe reconsider ur choice of cpu.. the E8600 is slightly faster but can be overclocked to 4 GHZ on its stock cooler!!!!!

XFX make great gaming mobo's, check out computersonly.co.za, i bought the 750 from there, absolutely great, also if you get the XFX board, register on their forum, great bunch of guys there

So can the E8500

I would recommend a Gigabyte P45 DS3L motherboard with a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor, 2 x 1GB DDRII-1066 Hyper X Kingston ram, Seagate 500GB-7200RPM 32MB Cache SATA II, MSI HD 4870 1Gb Graphics card , and a good power supply Ie; Corsair VX 520w, as for the case the Coolermaster CM690;)dam sexy case that is

OK managed to get hold of a Sapphire Radeon 4870X2 for R6496. Thanks to another post somewhere in this forum I got in contact with the guys at PC International (www.pcint.co.za).

Fury guys tell me the jump in price between 8500 & 8600 does not warrant the small increase in performance, so guess I will stick to the 8500.

Now for all the legends out there, which mobo to go for to match the E8500 and 4870X2 best?? I want to leave room for CrossFiring a second 4870X2 in future, and want to be able to play with overclocking the system. And yes I know, take PSU capacity into account, shall I just go for a 1000W now or replace the PSU when I buy the second Radeon?

Thank you as always for your efforts in helping me choose.

Rudi

So far my mind is on this board

ASUS Intel P45, LGA775, 1600FSB, 4xDual DDR2 1200, 2x PCI-x16(CrossFire), 1xPCI-x4, 2xPCI-x1, 2xPCI, 1xATA133, 6xSATAII, 1x eSATA, 2xGbe Lan, 8ch-Sound, Max 10xUSB, 2x IEEE1394, ATX

Would this do the trick?

Pretty much, Crossfire support and DDR2 1200. No need for DDR3 unless you want to go with the New Corei7. And its a P45 chipset so it will overclock the E8xxx processor quite well.. What CPU cooler are you going to get? If you looking for the Bang for Buck one you might want to consider the Coolermaster Hyper TX2

If you intend to Crossfire at 16x + 16x then yes. Otherwise if you're running a single gfx card there are cheaper options, check the P43 boards (i.e. P5QL-Pro).
