I'm stuck in Cape Town, with ADSL, hearing of the rumours if not fact that the 10gb local cap will be implemented soon, and so I must start seeking other broadband packages. Now I've heard nothing but good reports about Sentech, and so I'm very excited about it, the 256k version seems ideal although not as speedy, is certainly uncapped unless you abuse it... The only thing thats holding me back is the gaming aspect, I game probably 2, maybe 3 hours a day and a lot more on the weekend, and so If i dont have acceptable pings with Sentech I wont be pleased. I saw someone in cs the other day with a 20 ping with Sentech and was raving about it, this being the 512k option, then I saw another guy (Enzo Matrix/Cerberus) with Sentech with 300 pings so I'm a bit worried. Ok ill cut the blabble now, is there any way Sentech can improve the gaming aspect for MyWireless? If they crack this nearly ALL the people on adsl that game at the moment will move to Sentech, so just wondering is there any way possible?

I'm stuck in Cape Town too.

I've got my modem already (256k). I'm just waiting for them to launch here (27 May).

Someone on the forum (Rodent I think) worked out the theoretical minimum ping you can get on Mywireless. It worked out to about 80ms. So, that’s acceptable for gaming. But in reality the people who disable the debugging overheads on the connection (Find out more about that from rodent’s tweaks) get local pings of between 120 and 200.

Now that is more than good enough for your RTS or RPG. You can play FPS on it, but it’s not as good as ADSL or ISDN.

BUT. International Pings on Mywireless is much better than on ISDN or ADSL. Those pings are under 500. So with Mywireless you could play MMORPG’s, RTS or RPG on international servers (BIG plus I think).

Just another thing to consider. Have you tried playing on-line on a Capped ADSL Line. That does not make a “Happy Chappie”.

a 20 ping!! hmmm sounds like me 21 ping. Mayb its one of the other wireless companies in ct. If sentech could somehow archieve a constant 60-80 ping, I would def swop over to MyWireless. The roaming ability! This makes MyWireless a superior product to any offering in SA

..- dot dot dash ;)

That Cerberus fellow you refer to is me :P as for pings well they range.. usually around 120-150 depending on the load what gets to me is the spiking but like all New technologies their working on it :) If you want a gaming ping get ISDN or ADSL(as you currently are on) but if gaming is just for fun and kicks and you just want to do well then get mywireless :) I still am very happy with the product even with the high pings becuase of the no cap or port shaping and in the future I can see this being a very nice service to have.My opinion... wait and see you have ADSL wait till you need more i.e they impliment the 10 gig cap thing.

Regards
Cerberus

Telkom either know something we dont or they are just plain stupid. I can only speculate that they dont want ADSL to become big in SA by their product pricing. So Im thinking that they are happy to have a few thousand customers who use ADSL mainly for browsing and mail. The rest of the customers will take up other products and their main customers, the corporates are already stuck with their diginet lines.
Perhaps someday when some Company offers a product that Corporates will go for, only then will Telkom rethink its postion.

On the point of Wireless. As i have stated before. If I see with my own two eyes that I can play locally with a decent ping and no lag, I will consider Wireless. Only then would I cancel ADSL.

<br />One word: NO.

And the guy that got 20ms pings on Sentech is obviously lying.

And of course the fact that there's no tower up or planned for my area. [:(!]

Telkom - South Africa's Handbrake to progress.

Ag man - it's freakin' not bad at all really !

I think Telkom have been rolling out to where it really matters - the poor people in our country.

Sure, they are a monopoly, but one at a HUGE disadvantage. They have to provide telecommunications to areas that have never had it in the first place.

But never in my puff have I seen so much access to telecommunication in this fair land of ours.

I forgot to take my pills, so I'm optimistic in saying they might up the international cap to 10 gig, and keep local uncapped. But yea, we'll see. I dont care either way.

For those ADSL guys out there. Check out www.datapro.co.za

They offer business ADSL uncapped, including hardware (server) to host up to 20 clients for something like 2250 per month. So if you have 2250 per month to waste, and would like a nice little server hosting up to 20 of your friends or just you and your wife. I'd say go for it. You'd then have UNCAPPED ADSL, however, still the port shaping :(

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?
