Does anyone ever try and gank a higher level character with their alts? I am always keen to try my luck but the only time I ever get ganked is by groups or by players who are a much higher level.

Keep your main close when lvling your alts.And only use it when you get ganked by higher lvls.

Specially in places like STV.
 
I never hit 1st unless the person was ganking lowbies...

As for ganking a higher player. I fondly remember my very 1st hordie kill EVER was a lvl 35 warrior in Ashenvale. I snuck up on him with my lvl 26 rogue and creamed him :D

This led to a huge brawl between both our guilds as each side brought more and more players to 'avenge' the others' killing.

Make friends with max level players ;) I've gotten to the point, where i can identify a higher up's level roughly by what hes wearing (SM gear is the easiest to detect).
 
Don't get me wrong. I don't mind being ganked by a higher level player. I have won about 50% of those battles. I enjoy the challenge. I just get the feeling that for most players, it's about showing how strong they are instead of the challenge. I only bring my main (or ask a guild member in the area for help) if when a higher level is body camping me.
 
lol, my priest got ganked in Hillsbrad. Logged my Mage (which was parked in Tarren Mill) and killed every single ally I could find and wiped South Shore clean :p

Having a main makes being ganked so much fun :D
 
When I'm leveling I gank with my alts but I only bring my 80 along if I've got ??'s camping me which seldom happens.
Normally I'll try get away from them a few times before I bring in the big guns.

Even if the guy is a few levels above me if I'm in a ganking mood I'll give him a go and thanks to running with some BoA items I tend to be very well geared for my level so I've successfully ganked a few red guys, including one very confused Pally/Hunter combo that left me loling in STV.
 
Back in the day on Dentarg my friend Demoaghakar use to go clear out hillsbrand of low level horde on a daily basis cos Targa & Farga use to camp the WPL flight path
