Just realised that there is no such thing as garage card here in the UK. Was there not some legislation which prevented petrol being purchased on credit in SA, hence the need for garage cards ?

Most garages accept debit and credit cards(except where they have limited resources, or been caught too may times 
) these days however it comes down to money as usual. Only deviation i've found is this:
- No shell station will accept a cheque card! (its purely due to cost of having the transaction facility apparently, i spoke with a manager)
This is a National Rule.
Bp, engen both seem to work with debit + cheque cards.

Seems that I do need one after all 
. I got to a fairly large Engine garage in Centurion only to be told that they do not take Credit cards... Damn I was used to having a company paid-for garage card.
