Garage door motor battery replacement

Good Morning Guys

We recently moved to a new house and the garage door motor batteries needs to be replaced. See picture of motor name, I cant read that "red" name on it.

I see there is 2 x Remco RM12-2 (12V 2AH/20HR) batteries that needs replacement.

I have 2 brand new Centurion Gate motor batteries (12c 7.2AH CP4C2) that I have no need for.

Question: Can I use one of the 12v 7.2AH battery on the garage door motor? or will I mess it up?

Absolutely fine to use the 7.2 Ah.

Only issue could be the spade connectors - check they fit the terminals.
Thank you sir, I assume only use the one battery ? and yes the connectors will plug into the new battery . thank you, much appreciated
 

If that's the motor it looks like 24 V.

So you'll need both batteries in series. You shouldn't have to change the wiring though - it'll be safe even if they were originally in parallel.

You will be increasing the reserve capacity / runtime and lifespan by using these bigger batteries, but that's all.
 
This is how it's connected. Not sure what that "xtra" thin wire is there for, but its just laying on top of the motor and nowhere to connect (I assume its part of the parallel connection setup)

when I connect the new batteries, is there is certain sequence? or do I first do the 2 "short" + and -, and the the "main" neg and + ? or does it not matter (as long as the mains are switched off)
 
It doesn't really matter but this is easiest:

1. Unplug the short wire first and connect it between the black terminal on new battery 1 and the red on new battery 2.
2. Then take the red and black wires from the motor and connect them to the corresponding open terminals on the batteries.

That extra pair going to the molex connector could be for anything... maybe there was an aux load e.g. a light, or an external charger...

Just stop before you short circuit something. We need more info. You need to figure out if the motor is 12 or 24v. Seems like 24v

If the motor is 24v, one 12v battery is no good. Change it for a single 24v battery

or

buy an additional 12v battery to wire in SERIES, not parallel. The two batteries in your photo are likely wired in series. So + - + -. The short cable in your photo likely goes from the negative on the first battery to the positive on the second battery. So 12v + 12v =24v

Thanks Tom.. Yes, maybe they use that xtra wire for something else, i will just tie it nicely that it don't hang like it do not belong anywhere. much appreciated.

It has been established it's 24 V and the two 7 Ah batteries will work wired in series just like the ones they're replacing. Only difference is the terminal layout.
 
Thank you guys, I just follow the steps of Ttt and its working 100%. Just had to make a new allu. bracket as the 7ah batteries is sitting side ways on the battery platform (hangs a bit outside now) Hopefully it behave and don't drop onto the bakkie's roof.

Absolutely there is a sequence. You first have to put a non-insulated screwdriver across both + & - terminals. If you get a zap or there is a spark you can remove the screwdriver, if not try again. You can also try to stick your tongue out across both terminals if it will reach while standing on the ladder.

Then just wire them up however you feel. That's how I replaced the 2 stupidly small batteries on my garage motor with 7.2 batteries.

Just as I stopped looking for 24v lithium garage batteries T/A has them!

Nice, although having found how slow the built-in charger is on some of these motors I'm now thinking it might be wiser to spend a few hundred on a 10-20 W solar panel and regulator to keep the battery topped up. Then it doesn't matter if it's LA so much.
