Not sure how well this works but I hear cinnamon sugar works - ants eat the sugar but can't digest cinnamon and die - they also take it back to their nests

You get a green disc called ant trap. Its pretty effective. You cant just kill the worker ants they only live for a week or so, you have to nail the queen. The ant trap allows this as its not an imediate acting poison and they will take it back to the nest and the queen will eat it and eventually die.

What you will have to do is leave some food on the floor to make the ants come out. then follow their line all the way back as far as poissible to the entrance of the nest and place an ant trap disc there.

If you have pets like cats and dogs be careful about the ant trap discs as the poison is dispersed within a sweet honey/sap like thing and the dog will eat it if it finds the disc. Ants are very difficult to kill they are experts at detecting poisons so its a very difficult job to kill them. Also they re-establish themselves very quickly. you get rid of one queen there is another to take her place. Ideally you have to find the nest and pump smoke into the nest to suffocate the entire colony

Nip-it

You have to find the nests and throw it about 5cm away. It's quite expensive but much more economical in the long run. They say to use 20g but even 5g seems to eradicate quite a large nest in about a week. If you're scared for the pups you can cordon off the nest for a day till they take the bait.

For places where you have no other option Borax is also said to do the trick. You have to mix it in at about one third to the bait. In small quantities it's rather harmless to animals and humans but it supposedly wrecks havoc on the ants digestive system.

Those small brown ants are really a pest when they start burrowing into the house and build their little castles with the mushrooms growing from them.

Bayer granules work very well (can't remember it's exact name, but Builders has them. Not quite sure if puppies will eat them, but cats generally stay away from the granules.

The ants here by us don't fall for the Ant Trap anymore. I started buying Nippit, which works even "slower" than the Ant Trap, and it actually killed off the ants in the area for a good three weeks (the ant problem was pretty bad at that time). Not sure how safe it is for dogs though, as it's like little pellets you throw on the ground close to where they walk. It's also pretty pricey.

I can't recall the name now, sorry, but there's a roach poison that you dilute with water. Your local plant store should stock it. It dries pretty quickly and, as soon as it's dry, it's safe for pets and children, but will kill anything that comes into contact with it, including ants. It also doesn't kill those things immediately, so there's a chance the ants will take that back to the nest, too.
