Gardening thread

Are you in a hurry LOTR? My BIL's a keen gardener / handyman. The company he works for sells to ko-ops and he's a rep, travelling to all the dorpies. I'll show him this pic on Tuesday and he can ask around.

Will be over the next few months.

Thanks maumau. Appreciate the assistance. I'm not desperate for it, but I need to sink 10 or 11 poles within the next 2 months for a project at home. Problem is, the holes need to be between 1 and 1.2 meters deep, and normal digging to that depth makes a hole that would be exceptionally wide for a 100mm x 100mm pole, and not to mention the added effort.

Let me know if he comes across anything.

Is there a newer, active, gardening thread than this?

There's a couple of vege-growing threads. Things in the garden are a bit quiet at this time of year, certainly in Cape Town.

Nah, don't like them vegetables, more general gardening.

Starting to do my planning for the approaching spring.

This seems like the best place to start.

We use to have quite a few trees in the yard so only a few patches where the sun shines through of grass. Was normal grass and then in the beginning of winter those clover leave grass and a few dorings started taking over.

Now they have removed some of the trees and I need to start getting the grass growing. What is the best solution?

1. Use aerator mid Aug.
2. Decent water and add a few grass seeds.
3. Add kunsmis and water enough.

In between seasons right now but:
Plant new roses, prune and move any you have
Get the tree fellers in if you have big trees - now's the time to cut them back

Not the best photo but can anyone Id this tree?

Got long thorns.

It was on our short list to plant earlier this year. They become beautiful trees, and I like that the canopy is open and not densely leaved. But they get large, and we were warned that the root systems can be invasive and they shouldn't be planted within something like 10m from buildings. They are also quite far up on the list of trees most affected by the polyphagous shot hole borer. So we scrapped that idea and planted a dais cotinifolia aka the pompom tree instead.

The bark is sought-after by muti sellers, who strip the lower trunk and endanger the life of the tree. In Cape Town the municipality has had to paint the trunks of many of these trees in public areas to protect them. It looks a bit weird.

I had a fever tree in my last garden and while it is beautiful and fast growing and birds love it,
had 2 issues:
1. It drops its leaves and pollen and they are a nuisance near the pool
2. The thorns are very big and I have stood on them multiple times. It’s incredibly painful. Our pets also stood on them so problems for them too

I thought we might have an official thread for gardening question in general. I often have questions regarding gardening and it might be better to have an official thread dedicated to it rather than making a thread every time.

So I've currently got a massive caterpillar problem. I started a mint garden (about 3x2.5) in the alcove in front of my flat last year October and they were really doing amazing until about two weeks ago. It was very lush and full. Now it's barren and almost completely destroyed by green caterpillars. I kill them whenever I see them, but they still seem to be gnawing away like crazy. It doesn't help that they're the same color as the mint, which makes them very hard to spot.

Anyone have any advice on getting these little monsters under control?
Try to attract as many birds to your garden as possible. Birds are our natural pest control.
I have about 3 hadidas here daily that control the slugs in my yard pretty well.

We are waiting for our Okinawa sweet potato runners and then plan to do a 2000L fabric bed with them.

A chilli, garlic and sunlight washing liquid solution will kill most garden pests, mix it up and spray your plants

I filled 3 wheelbarrows early this year with sweet potatoes from a few plants. Now they are growing like weeds and will be taking over my garden in no time. I might cut some of them to accommodate other plants.
I haven't bought tomatoes from the store (maybe I bought once) as well since I still have frozen ones from my garden.
