Another great product from Garmin, the Forerunner 50 does exactly what it’s designed to do and is stylish and sleek, making it a fashion accessory as well.

A second is defined as the time needed for a cesium-133 atom to perform 9,192,631,770 complete oscillations. Thus, every minute the same cesium-133 atom will oscillate 551,557,906,200 times. A second is also a unit of time equal to one sixtieth of a minute (much easier to observe as an oscillating cesium-133 atom).

Benjamin Franklin once stated, “Remember that Time is Money. He that can earn ten shillings a day and sits idle one half of that day has really thrown away five shillings.” (1748 B. Franklin Papers (1961) III . 306.)

We all know that time is important. We sit at work wishing away the hours only to sit in traffic, staring at the clock and wishing we were home. Everything revolves around time and if Mr Franklin’s correct, money. Therefore (using some deductive logic – not the same as conductive reasoning), it can be argued that oscillating cesium-133 atoms equal money (SACM’s abridged and tacky thought experiment for this month).

Garmin’s Forerunner 50 was an incredibly difficult product to review this month. Journalists are notoriously lazy. Not only when it comes to work, but also when any mention is made of physical activity (we roll our eyes, our hands get clammy and we get heart palpitations just thinking about it).

However, someone had to do this review and this jaded, cynical, chain-smoking hack was the ‘lucky’ one. The Forerunner is a sleek and stylish sports watch, ideal for running (oh, the thought!) and other physical activities (playing Wii games and walking to the kitchen to make coffee don’t count).

The Forerunner comes bundled with a heart rate monitor (which is strapped around the chest just below the breast plate) and a foot pod (which is strapped to your trainers with your shoelaces). Also included is a USB receiver that you plug into your computer.

By default, the heart rate monitor and foot pod are already paired with the Forerunner 50. So, all you need to do is to attach the heart rate monitor and foot pod to the correct places and you’re good to go.

The Forerunner 50 shows you your workout data including training time, pace, distance, lap pace, lap time, lap distance, average and best pace, calories burned, and maximum and average heart rate.

Once you’re done training, you can wirelessly download your training data to your computer using the included USB receiver and Garmin’s ANT +Sport technology to analyse, store and share (we didn’t try this) your training data with Garmin’s online community.

To use this functionality, you need to download the Garmin Connect and Garmin Training Center software from Garmin’s Website.

Having used the Forerunner 50 for a week, we can definitely recommend it to anyone caring about their health.

Not only has this reviewer increased his fitness, but he has also (if Extreme Makeover is to be believed) dropped two dress sizes (Posh Spice watch out).
