Any ideas where I can get one locally in South Africa?
Available at Amazon.com for $102, need the Garmin
as their are Linux drivers in the 2.6 kernel.

most (all???) gps devices connect via serial, and use one of two protocols
sirf
or
nmea.

apart from that, no driver can tell the difference really between one gps device and another. the garmin devices use nmea (the revision of nmea they use is listed on the last page of the manual, but it is of little importance, as long as it supports nmea)

what i am saying is, are you sure you need the garmin, because i think any nmea gps device will work in its place

Not sure about the drivers, but I know you can get garmins from Cape Union Mart. Probably most camping places actually

Will try gpsbabel or gpsd or gd2 software and see if it will work.
as I want to connect the GPS to a Linksys NSLU2 network attached
storage device reflashed with Debian Linux and then upload the
GPS data realtime via GSM phone and include the Google Maps
URL to plot my course on Google Maps.

Thanks I will try Cape Union Mart, they should not be that expensive
as I bought my Garmin Quest from Amazon for R1800 saving compared
to Due South 7 getting the SA maps too.
