The 215 is the cherry on top of the cake in terms of ease of use and the latest features. It’s simple, incredibly effective and worth the money if you’re a regular driver.
Garmin have been on the map for a while now in terms of offering hand held GPS units designed to get you from A to B without too much backseat driving from your wife or significant other. That being said, they’ve had a long time to perfect what they do, and it’s seems as though they have.
The GARMIN Nuvi 215 W is a widescreen GPS device that packs a lot of kick for such a small device. It ships preloaded with the latest 2009 South Africa map set, integrated Bluetooth as well as several other handy features to make the driving experience much less painful.
It’s large touch screen made it easy to input the destination details on departure, although having to type in Johannesburg anytime I wanted to type in a street name was reasonably frustrating. Despite this it calculated the route according to my specifications (fastest route, shortest distance,most fuel efficient) and I arrived safely after following a series of mono toned instructions from the onboard computer.
The map settings were also highly accurate and also included interesting information such as gradient, traffic warnings and speed limit notifications. The battery life was equally impressive, averaging at a full week of heavy use per charge.
The 215 also boasts an ‘eco drive’ function which calculates a users’ fuel consumption, cost and carbon footprint on a given trip. After inputting the relevant data (fuel cost per litre, average mileage per 100 kilometres) it spits out exactly how much you’ve expended in terms of fuel as you drive. It was particularly interesting to see how large a carbon footprint I left after just a short trip home.
