I'm in a mild pickle. I live near Durban, and occasionally need to travel into town. I know my way around the main area's, but occasionally end up having to travel to places I've never been. Two years ago, my GPS would've been 100% capable. However, with Durban being Durban, and it's billions of new street names, I can't always get to a place anymore, as the address is in a road named after some guy I've never heard of (not that I'd heard of the previous people either), and my GPS has never heard of them either.

So my question is. Do Garmin offer updates to the map software I already own. Garmin US gives free updates to US street maps, but you pay $119 for the Southern Africa maps. Does Garmin SA give us updates, so that I can get a GPS that works with the new names?

BTW I own the Garmin Nuvi 205.

IIRC you get one free upgrade per set you buy and then a discount on the next version. If you bought the 2009 mapset you'll get a mid-year update for free. You can buy the 2010 set at a reduced price.

I wouldn't hold my breath about garmap updating their maps - they are slow. And some of those names changed a while back and they still have the original names. I think they may tell you that they don't have the capability to load dual names.

I wouldn't beat Garmin up about the idiot you have running the metro though.

i know i got my last update for free, as i paid for the previous upgrade...

...iirc if you paid for 08 maps (cd came in a silver case), then the 09 (came in black case) ones are free (not sure if the dates are, i can only check ones i'm home)

the 205 is a newish model, so newest map might be a free one...buy the cd its r10, and give it a shot
