Hi,
I've heard that recently Garmin and Tomtom have released GPS models that feature live traffic updates.
Garmin somehow uses the Altec Netstar service to track traffic and the Tomtom uses its 'live' service to track traffic.

I'm just wondering, has anyone tried them out? Even better, has anyone had the opertunity to compare them and see which one is more acurate?

I'm just worried that both are still in their infancy when it comes to traffic updates?

I think i started only recently in RSA ( june round about). so unless i find alot of positive feedback somewhere i dont feel willing to part with the 3k for a GPS...

anybody out there using this feature yet?

basically the GPS will detect and allow you to route around congested areas.. major advantage for afternoon traffic.

Havent used this feature yet. Keeping my eye on this forum.

I've got a Nuvi 205W and it has the traffic thingy with it, it only cost me R1300.

GPS's have come down somewhat so its not that expensive anymore:D

wouldn't it require gprs/3g connectivity?

Not that I'm aware of no, but hell I'm new to this sort of thing, lol.

Try sending Garmin SA a mail and ask them. Their customer service ain't bad.

I had a problem understanding the ecoRoute application so they sent me the manual the next day.

Gamin supplier

You can call the suppliers of Garmin in JHB: Avnic trading 011 251 9999. Their service is excellent.

You can also go ask on their forums at http://www.garmap.co.za/forum

You would have to register though.

I have looked into this. Garmin uses Altec Netstar data and TomTom uses Tracker data to determine congestion. In the UK GSM/GPRS data is used on the units themselves, the same way Trapster calcs congestion. I believe both uses RDS to stream data to the units.

My question is now how they are updating mobile speed cameras as they claim to include them. Without a manual user based system like Trapster, where users report them as they drive past, I cannot see how it will work.
