Ok before i start I have a Garmin and I have to say i am, at times, NOT happy with its performance i.e. I will be driving on the N1 and it starts telling me to turn left or do a U turn and when i look it shows that I am on a road to the side of the highway - either left OR right of the highway - not very accurate OR it sometimes has full signal but takes forever to put the vehicle on the map correctly to the point that i would be driving through buildings, over islands and not close to where I am in reality and sometimes it is fine and it matters not in terms of weather etc - it can be clear or cloudy so i can't say that signal was a problem. SO i am not looking for a fix for that but...

I have another unit which was a JNC 743 with handymaps which is updated to NDrive 9 (thinking about upgrading the software again to V10. I am very happy with that unit AND NDrive!

However I need a unit for the wifes new car and i have been looking around and besides TomTom there is also Navigon. I can;t find suffiecient reviews or comparisions between them all to decide but let me say that I am leaning AWAY from Garmin!

Any comments or sugestions?

I have a widescreen TomTom, works pretty well for me. Easy to use, too.

I have used Garmin and Tom Tom. Tom Tom has generally been easier to use and also routes a lot better.

I got the new TomTom 1000 live. Did a review some where's around here...
Anyways, Awesome device, if computer conectivity is not a biggie for you, or you can wait a month or two for them to impliment the new stuff then its the one to go for. Awesome little device. Way more accurate than the garmin. Actually told me I was in the wrong lane the other day!

Never owned a Garmin in my life but my TomTom XXL is the shizz! Its easy to use, I just plug it straight into my notebook & download new maps, buy character voices online & download it all straight to my unit.

No mess no fuss & very simple. :)

Its routing capabilities amaze me.

I have the tomtom go 750 live, the traffic feature is awesome and works much much better than i even hoped it would and the maps are up to date and can be updated using the software.
I've recommended it to my father and will definitely recommend u have a look at it.
Check out the go 650 live for a cheaper alernative or the go 1000 live for a more expensive alternative, unfortunately all of these models are in the upper end range and therefor cost quite a lot (at least in my opinion) between R2500 and R3200.

But if u want a hassle free solution with easy to follow instructions, with an easy to use interface, i really cant imagine a better gps unit.
I get gps signal in my bedroom before even getting anywhere near my car and while it sometimes loses the reception in the house I have yet to see it lose reception while driving.
Also if you do decide to change your route it does its replanning so fast you barely notice it.

I used to use garmin mobile XT on my cellphone but that was so crap, you heard "lost satellite reception" and "recalculating" more than you heard directions.
Also this tomtom attempts to say the street names alloud for you, altho it fails miserably with anything that doesnt have a british sounding name - altho with your imagination you can still figure that out :)

Interestingly had the Tom Tom 630 brilliant till it started giving me problems took it back to Incredible Connection last week and yes its messed up...working on getting something else as they are out of stock of the 630s.

Hmmm, seems majority are pointing to the TomTom.
You don't say which garmin you have, but you may want to update the firmware. Are there any avoidances set that could interfere with the routing?
I use a garmin, as I use T4A maps, but I find that the garmin is very clumsy when searching for a specfic address ( at least on the Nuvi 205), I do love mapsource though, which is enough to make me stick with Garmin.

Just got GO 650 Live as a replacement for my 230 we will see how it goes
