Hi

I have an WM6 device (HTC TyTN II) that has TomTom Navigator on. TomTom is great but it has no official South African version, and it is on-road only. To purchase a TomTom Navigator you have to purchase it for Europe or US (with their maps) and then separately buy the SA maps.

I enjoy hiking/mtb and would like something for these activities such as trip computer, route navigation, custom map loading etc. Have been playing with GPS Tuner which is briliiant for off road.

Before I purchase GPS Tuner it would like to know if Garmin XT supports the following:
1) off road navigation (route navigation, compass, track log, custom maps, trip computer, altitude chart etc).
2) South African version including neighbouring countries.
3) Be installed on my own mini SD card. Don't want it installed on another card requiring switching etc.
4) Any other comparisons with TomTom w.r.t.
Anyone who knows about this let me know. If it does it may be cheaper to purchase the Garmin XT whole package solution.

Thanks
Louis

Garmin Mobile XT

According to Avnic, the local agents for Garmin, a Mobile XT specifically designed for PPC/PDA/Smartphones, is due to be launched mid-February.

It is designed in such a manner that the user can choose to use a devices on-board GPS (Nokia N95, HTC TyTN II) or use an external GPS Receiver (Garmin X10, X20, Nokia LD-3W)

There will be a once-off lisencing fee, which is a life-time lisence, and is transferable to new devices as and when they are needed.

I would also be very interested in such a solution. But no tacklog, no waypoints, or no tracks4africa compatibility and I will not buy.

so it will be released, but does it do:
1) off road,
3) run of my own mini sd
4) compare well with tomtom?
1) Only pukka GPSr models have an off-road capability.
2) I suppose Avnic will load the mapset on a micro SD card as the mid-February release, mentioned by Pezulu, is specifically developed for the TyTn II.
3) Cannot compare the two as I have never used TomTom.

Thanks,

What is a pukka GPS model? My TyTN does off-road/route navigation with the right software loaded. I have this on trial version, but if I can buy Garmin and it has both road navigation and off road navigation it would save me paying for two pieces of software.

a "Pukka" GPSr is a fully specified GPSr. It can do off-road, track logs, routing, street navigation, etc. The TyTn II's primary function is a cellphone PDA and secondary a street navigator with the necessary software loaded. It will take you from point A to B, has POI's and voice guidance. However, it has no off-road capability ie it will only lock to streets and roads in the supplied mapset. It is useless in the bundu where there are no roads. It also does not leave a bread crumb trail behind it. You will need a fully specified (pukka) GPSr if you plan to use it off-road.

Is Pukka GPSR software or hardware?

Anyway I can use my TyTN offroad with GPS Tuner (or other offroad software). So I am unsure what I need if can do it already.

Can Garmin XT do off road navigation, custom maps etc.

Pukka GPSr is hardware ie the GPS itself. I speak under correction but I do not think Garmin XT can do off-road. It is only suitable for street navigation.

I suggest you pose your question in the Garmap Forum. There are very willing and expert people on the forum that will be able to help you.
