Gary McKinnon has won his 10-year battle against extradition to the US after Home Secretary Theresa May stepped in to halt proceedings.

The self-confessed computer hacker from north London cannot be sent to the US to face trial due to fears for his health, Mrs May told the Commons.

She also announced a shake-up for the UK's extradition arrangements, introducing a so-called forum bar which will allow a UK court to decide if a trial should be brought here instead.

Mr McKinnon, who suffers from Asperger's syndrome - a high-functioning form of autism, admits hacking into US military computers but claims he was looking for evidence of UFOs.

The 46-year-old could have faced up to 60 years in prison in America if convicted.

Perhaps the US military who used default passwords on their top-secret servers should be charged with negligence instead.

Lol, I wonder what Julian Assange is thinking. Not to mention the myBB legions who bought the lie that the US only had to snap it's fingers and the UK would come running.

"Lapdog" was the term iirc :D

Maybe old Jools should have seen through his moral crusade to the end and trusted in the righteousness of his actions and the justice systems of two democracies. But it seems like in convincing everyone else he would be extradited from Sweden at the UK's insistence, he started to believe his own bs story.

Ah well, it's turned out not so bad for him I guess, he still has his liberty. I wonder what's on TV tonight Jools?

I thought this was stupid, now all anyone has to do to avoid extradition is pretend you are going to kill yourself.

And all you have to do to stop going to jail for murder is pretend you are innocent? :)

Now all Shrien Dewani has to do is say he is ganna kill himself, and thats it. Justice not served. Expect this card soon from him.

Well murder is hardly the same as looking for UFO's....

The reason given for denying the extradition is the dude will kill himself and that takes away his human rights. UFO`s and killing are irrelevant to that decision.

R U 4 SERIAL ?/

What a joke

Why should he not be held responsible for the offense he has committed ?

This doesn't mean he won't be held responsible. The case is now being considered by the UK. This was about where he should stand trial.

Extradition should only apply where the fugitive committed a crime and then left the country.

This is case is a bit tricky because he never physically entered the US. He was in the UK at the time. Although that's not the reason, extradition was blocked. Ironically, if he where tried in the US he could have used this as a defence. With his medical condition, a good lawyer in US courts would get him off. If tried in the UK it's more likely he will get convicted.
