So i have a small wall mounted gas water heater that isn't working (was working till a few days ago with no issues). Its not even igniting. I've replaced and checked the batteries, power coming out of that. Gas is full. Water pressure is fine.

Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking maybe the gas regulator is faulty?

How do these things work? Does the gas flow before the ignition system comes into play? Or is the gas restricted if the ignition system is faulty?

Does gas come out when you try to ignite? It might just be that the igniter is broken. I've had this happen on a portable gas heater and you can simply light it with a standard lighter instead of clicking to ignite. Not sure if that will work in your case, but it's worth a try.

Does it use mains electricity or a 9V battery? We had both types in our last house, larger 16l/min variable flow unit for the house that used mains electricity and smaller 5l/min fixed flow unit that used a 9V battery for an out side bedroom. I had to replace the 9V battery in the smaller unit a few times...

How old is it ? Photo of gas heater would help.
Does it make the tick-tick sound as if it is trying to ignite the gas ?
If not probably the water flow detection.

Water flow knob on the front ? try opening/closing the water flow knob. may be dirt and that could kick it loose.

Bad news is my guess you either need to get it serviced/replacement part.

Doubtful.

Gas flow/ignition restricted until there is water flow. Older models work with a membrane switch
new models with a hall sensor.
How it was explained to me:
Water flowing
Ignition starts
Gas flow start
Ignition detected
Gas continues flowing, Ignition not detected (few second) gas stops.

Uses 2 x D cell batteries, I even replaced the little battery unit that houses them and I get 3v coming out.
I'm going to pick up a new regulator today and see if that makes a difference.
I'm assuming its either the regulator or maybe the coil/ignition system.

Thanks it is a pretty old unit so if after replacing the regulator and it still wont work then I'm thinking of just replacing it.

There is no tick tick tick sound when the water is opened so like you say either the water flow sensor or maybe the actual ignition unit.
The water here is quite hard so maybe something has clogged up now.
Ive fiddled about with the flow control knobs and that makes no difference either.

Tried that but there is no gas flowing out.

OK, found the problem, I think this switch was a bit dirty or something. i'll get some contact cleaner and give it a spray.
This article is what helped me narrow down the problem. I tested on another working heater and even without the water and gas being on, once you open this switch then there is the arcing and tik tikking for the ignition.
