Gas heater

Bought a Goldair heater about 7 or 8 years ago from Makro use it every winter and no issues with it paid something like R799.00 at the time.

use it every winter since, running cost is not so bad 2 cylinders or 3 at worse per winter. (9Kg)

I am finding that newer gas heaters use less gas for the amount of heat they produce. I have a AIM as heater that has heating panels that looks/works much like the gas heaters we had as kids 35+ years ago and an Alva has heater which has different looking heating panels. The AIM will typically finish a 9KG bottle in 2-3 weeks of regular use whereas the Alva will use a bottle for 1.5 months under the same usage patterns.

That said, the AIM heater was R700 and the Alva was R2000.

I think the new ones run 110 grams of gas per panel per hour but I stand to be corrected.

Nice detailed post.

To sum it up, which will be the best heater to get for a 40 square meter room?

See my post in 'panel heater v oil heater' and 'gas heater v oil heater'.

If you are out at work all day and want a quick fix when you get home, I would say a fanheater could be best, particularly if you are static in one place in the house, say at a desk or watching TV. If not, well see what is said in the other fori mentioned above.

LOL 1 tank like lasts us 2 winters.

Since moving to the Dam, we had filled out 9kg 2 weeks ago. It went tits up last night. R 175 for 2 weeks. However, it was on 3 panel just about 8 hours a day. And yes, I'm a pissy when it comes to cold :D

There is more to it though.

Compare it to Post paid and prepaid contracts.

You fill the gas bottle and use it sparingly as you know it will run out. If it runs out you have no heat. Either re-gas or sit in the cold till you can re-gas. Where with an electrical heater, people tend to just have it running 24/7, only feeling the pain when the bill comes. Even knowing the bill is coming again next month, it's easier just to put it on, since you can :p

I prefer gas, same with our stove and geysers. Just much easier to keep an eye on the expenditure and it does really work out cheaper, I guess it's because you are more in tune with the fees as opposed to getting a power bill end of the month.

Tshwane would like you to have prepaid meters!!

My Boardman's gas heater is 24 years old and still 100%.

I was about to ask if anyone else bougth the boardmans one! Had ours for as long as I can remember, bought another one from Makro I think, works great too

lol you sound like my sister, she finished a 9Kg in a day. :p

I have prepaid at my new place too in NW. Still feels like I'm using less by using gas, but that is due to geysers/stove/heater. I guess it makes a difference then.

ya i think with gas you have it in front of you so know full well its limited so you will use it sparingly. electricity even prepaid will still be out of mind
